I've been pulled over twice (non-fix-it ticket related) and the officer didn't say anything about the tint on the tail lights

Vinyl tint over mine, makes more sense to me than painting them...still really bright with the LEDs when braking. Haven't had any issues.

It is illegal in California. It depends mostly on the area you're in as to whether or not you'll get a ticket for it. The darker you go, the more likely you are to get a ticket for it.

It will most likely be a fix-it ticket ($10), but it doesn't have to be because it's an intentional modification to your vehicle.

    Not enough.
If you are uncertain then do vinyl tint but it will have that brown color to it. But mine have been tintedfor almost a year and never been hassled about them.

So if I had it tinted they would look brown? And yeah it doesn't seem like cops care to much, and if it's just a fix it I can afford to have them tinted

Most likely it will be a fix-it, but not necessarily. It's up to the discretion of the cop. If he makes the ticket non-correctable, you can't just resolve it by fixing it. It'll be a fine closer to $129. Either way, that means you have to be able to undo it.

For me the bigger concern would be being hit from behind. In that case, the accident could be considered your fault.

yeah thats true, and i was talking to my buddy about it being your fault, hes a cop and he said 99% of the people that would hit you from behind would not even think about it using that

i think the paperwork processing fee for a fix-it is about $50ish.

i got a ticket for tint but a b!tch ass pig in san marino (very picky city by the way don't ride through there if you have noticeable mod's) they'll get you for anything. so when i got the ticket and had it corrected, i took it to the traffic clerk at the local court and they said my fine was $360ish and i said WTF WHY? they said the stupid ass pig wrote that tint was NOT a correctable offense. so i said i'm not going to pay that and they said i could write a letter to the judge and i did. i photocopied the back and front of the ticket to show it and the correction stamp. and said this cop didn't know what she was doing, basically telling the judge how stupid that cop was, anyone would say it is an correctable offense and blah blah blah. so a couple days later i got a letter back saying sorry for the misunderstanding and that the judge has overridden the ticket and corrected it but i still have to pay a $50ish paperwork processing fee.

just go buy another set of tail lights for when you need to swap them for out for a day to do the correction on your ticket.
