Upgraded brakes?

I have a 2017 Tacoma Sport. I want to upgrade the OEM brakes to something better (stop quicker). Is this possible? Is this even possible without having to make other significant changes? I'm thinking it would be like changing OEM shocks for Bilstein 5100.

I would think this would apply to 3rd gen as well.

 

2nd and 3rd gen share brake platforms.

I upgraded to Stoptech cryo and slotted rotors with the TRD pads, per Crash's recommendation... I've been incredibly happy with them.

 

I had a braking vibration with 40K miles on my OEM brakes. I put PowerStop pads and rotors on 15K miles ago and very happy with them.

Your stopping distance is limited by your tires, not your brakes.

and the stock brakes are tiny and undersized let alone with added weight, and are not up to the task of hard use.

When it comes to traction, yes..

But brake fade is a real problem and has nothing to do with tire grip. There is a limit to the amount of heat energy brakes can absorb. Bigger rotors and calipers can help raise that limit

 

If you are on race track.

 

Or going down a mountain pass. Or carrying weight in the bed. Or towing. Or running larger than stock tires. Or panic stopping on the freeway to avoid a collision

 

Brakes are a regulated safety issue. I’m confident they are capable of stopping a taco that is under its GVWR.

 

Then it’s not for you. Most of us are on the heavy side with big tires and brake fade is real. Until you experience it you won’t get it.( not just a race track thing)

Minnesota isn’t exactly known for big mountain passes and all the brake upgrades that exist can’t just be people that needed new rubber. Also you drive an off-road… not the same brakes setup as op.

I installed this in my truck yesterday, it’s the 2nd taco I’ve had and did it on the last one too… if your brakes are fine, cool, not all of us have the same truck or needs

As @b_r_o mentions, lots of real world situations (other than the race track) where the tires hold up but some part of the brake system fails, or reaches or exceeds its limits.

Really? I-77 SB, just south of Fancy Gap, VA. Elevation drop of 1,200’ in only a few miles. If you’ve never been in a vehicle where the brakes over-heated and warped (and -couldn’t- stop), then you don’t know what you’re talking about. Try doing a panic stop in a GVWR Taco in MN, and then south of Fancy Gap. It’s an eye-opener.

If the OP wants to upgrade his brakes, let him. Share insights and experiences. (I’m going with 17” 4R brakes.). If you think the OP shouldn’t modify his “regulated safety” Taco, then you should remove the suspension upgrades and 33” tires from yours.

FWIW, I have never experienced brake fade on my truck. I drove over payload while towing for 500 miles through the mountain passes, no issues.

I actually find the brakes work quite well on my truck. I’m still on original pads too. Never even opened up my drums, will do it in the spring.

I find it very interesting when I see threads where dudes want to upgrade their brakes. Personally I see absolutely no need for that and I use my truck to do truck stuff. I’m also lifted, on 33s and carry 350-550# of constant weight.

 

Im pretty heavy running 33s and from my experience stock brakes work just great.

 

35s here, my wheel tire combo is like 100# Stock ain’t cutting it

Glad yours are up to the task, cheaper that way, but I tried lots between 2 tacos.. 2010+ 4Runner calipers and slotted rotors with the tundra booster/ master swap is where I ended up. Finally I have brakes that feel up to the task. High, firm pedal with great stopping power.
