We currently have a 1st gen Tundra, wife doesn't like it because it's too large. Before that we had a '99 / 1st gen Tacoma extended cab and loved how small, nimble and fast (lightweight) it was.

Trying to replicate that small/nimble/fast in a 4th gen. I've driven a new double cab and it's really good.

Talked to a dealer friend and he said that roughly 1 in 20 4th gens will be Xtracabs. I've been watching their allocation spreadsheet and haven't seen any Xtracabs built yet. I know that these trucks can't be custom ordered, so you're pretty much stuck with whatever HQ allocates to the dealers.

Has anybody seen an Xtracab in the wild yet? It's seeming like I might just need to sit back until Q3/Q4 and search nationally.

I think they were to start production this month on them. There are now 3 prerunners on allocation when there was only 1 on Monday. So looks like they are getting ready for them. Make sense on the 1 in 20 number. Both GM and Ford have gotten rid of them.

I’m just super bummed that all the resources say the xtra cab has less payload than the double cab, which is opposite of the way it used to be :(

The 4G Tacoma is going to be nearly as large and heavy as your 1G Tundra

Edit: checking curb weights, it looks like the Tacoma 4G is actually heavier than a 1G Tundra. o_O Progress!

Tows the same and has more power and torque than even the v8 version…while getting 27% better highway mileage than the small motor version

All for almost the same inflation adjusted price as the 2001…but with vastly better tech and refinement.

    progress o_O

Yes, but OP said he wanted "small, nimble, and lightweight." Toyota hasn't made that since 2004.

Sure, but we also want it to haul 2000lbs, tow 12000lbs, be quiet as a tomb, be strong enough to swing 35s, have the stiffest chassis the world has ever seen, and have the heaviest rock crawling drivetrain parts you can buy

I don’t think the extra cab 4th gen is going to be a good seller at all since Toyota decided to drop the suicide doors. It’s one of the best and most convenient pickup features of the last couple decades and they eliminated it after 2 generations with it. I wouldn’t buy one because of that, and I think Toyota is going to find out a lot of people will be turned off by limiting their access.

Same. I really think they will drop the body style within a few years, blame the low uptake, and never admit they crippled it and turned away buyers.

I hope they make plenty of PreRunners, it's going to be a perfect daily for me. Will feel like driving a go-kart after driving the DCLB

I think the majority are commercial fleet buyers (AAA battery service, Orkin pest control), so they'll continue to be available in the lower trims.

The timing of the 4th gen is such that I probably won't look into one for a decade, so I'm indifferent as to whether XC OR will be offered.

If you don't need a truck as a daily, 4Runner is a good option, same footprint as a Tacoma regular cab, good for darting through traffic.

I dunno about that. I am a contractor and the lack of rear doors makes it very bad buy proposition from my point of view. Getting things out of the back with a lack of access means it won't get used. I would simply shop at Nissan and get doors that open and save some money.

I was really looking forward to going AC for my work truck, but Toyota effectively killed that idea.

I could be wrong, but I'd bet fleet buyers aren't enough to keep the factory stamping them out. I think the days of the 2wd AC pool boy Toyota truck are about dead. At least as the market sits right now.

Full disclosure, I really thought those little Transit vans and such were gonna take over too. Manufacturers just killed that market though.

So looking at the Frontier, the King Cab is no longer offered with Pro-4X (Nissan's equivalent of TRD OR) in the US. The King Cab is completely dropped in Canada for 2024. Seems to be a dying configuration.
