I meant for tech jobs, like going out to the field to take water and soil samples and stuff like that. If you do that for 5-7 years you should eventually move up to project management. That’s the kinda stuff I’m looking for with environmental firms. Even those are pretty competitive though.

@TacoVio this was the top comment on a post I looked at asking if mud logging was worth it. I know it was just one guys opinion and one company. But it’s definitely not for everyone. Who knows, I could end up loving it.

“That answer will vary from person to person. For me, that answer is no. The money is good, but not that good for what it requires in terms of lifestyle.

    Here's my reason why:

I spent most of my twenties in the military, and then went to school when I got out. I got my degree in geology in my early 30s and now I'm looking to find a career that let's me settle down a bit. If I was 10 years younger maybe I would have a different attitude towards oil-field lifestyle, but I'm not.

I got a job offer to go from mud logging to MWD and turned it down because the company required 120 days non-stop training just to start, and on top of that had very little down-time between jobs. The hiring manager flat-out told me "say goodbye to your friends and family, you're not gonna see them a lot for the next couple of years". I'm at a point where I want to put that behind me, if I wanted to sleep out in a trailer far from home for years on end I could have just stayed in the service. I am looking for career paths that take me out of that lifestyle, not pull me deeper into it. Time will tell if I am fool for passing on the job offer.

But that's my take. Like I said, if I was in my early 20s I might have an entirely different attitude towards it. For some, the lifestyle might not be so bad - and the pay only gets better the longer you stay in the field-operations side of the industry.”
