    1st post.
3 weeks ago sold my kingcab 2005 tacoma with 49.8k on craig's list.
    got a 2011, 4 door tacoma. i like tacomas.
my insurance company says my 4x2,doublecab,159hp,4cyl,15"tires,no decals/pinstripes,etc, is a prerunner.
they say my vin 5TFJX4CN7BX0069xx is a prerunner vin.
my insurance company says the the unique vin letters J C N makes it a prerunner.
are there any 4 cyliner prerunners?
are prerunners more expensive to insure?

Assuming that Toyota didn't change the VIN codes since 2010, your VIN means:
5: Made in USA at TMMTX, TMMI, or NUMMI
    T: Manufactured by Toyota
    F: Truck
J: If Tacoma, then Dbl Cab 4x2
    X: 2TR-FE engine
4: Manual seat belt - all seats, Front air bag & side air bag - 1st row, Curtain airbag - all rows
C: If Tacoma, then model series TRN220, TRN225, or GRN225
    N: Tacoma
    7: Check digit
    B: Model year 2011
    X: Made in Texas
    0069xx: Serial number

That VIN does not make it a PreRunner. PreRunners are models TRN260, TRN265, GRN265, or GRN270.

As long as your insurance company has the right VIN, I wouldn't worry about whether they think it's a PreRunner or not.

If It has the height of a 4x4 and suspension and it's a 6 lug but your truck isn't a 4x4 then my friend you have a prerunner.
If u have a dropped truck and it has 5 lugs then it's a regular truck

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
there are 4cyl prerunners, 4x4s, and 5 luggers. it sounds like you have one of the new 4cyl double cabs. if that's the case, you do not have a prerunner. prerunners should cost more to insure since the prerunner costs more than a 5 lugger

Okay .... I have to ask the OP. You bought an '11 Tacoma from a Toyota dealer I am guessing. I assume this is new?

Are you telling us you signed the papers, gave them some $$$ and drove it off the lot without really knowing your model?

I am not trying to be a dick but I have got to ask.

    paid cash for a 4 door 4 lug 2011 tacoma, identical to my 2005 2 door tacoma, i.e., dials-switches-same place-same function.
insurance agent says according to their definition of vin- i have a prerunner.
bottom line i got what i desired - but i do not want to pay a premium for insurance if prerunner's cost > than a plain vanilla tacoma.

Got ya ...... now I understand your question.

USAA has mine as a Prerunner as well with the correct VIN for my 2WD AC ... I called, got confirmation that I am insuring what I have.

As a matter of fact the premiums dropped from my '06 2WD RC .... go figure .... all I can think is it has side air curtains and seat air bags.

ps .... I hope that the 9 bottle holders don't lead them to believe that I can carry 8 passengers along with me ....
