Just bought a 2021 Trd was at the boat ramp for the first time the second day of ownership and tried to pull the boat out of the boat ramp. Let my foot off the break, and the truck starts rolling backwards got on the forum and found out it’s a common problem ever since they changed to the stupid six speed transmission Can’t believe the national traffic safety board would allow vehicle to roll backwards when in drive if it’s an automatic vehicle because you could roll backwards at a stoplight and hit somebody. I also cannot believe that after the years of this problem, Toyota has done nothing to find a solution for it. I am a Toyota person I’ve owned five of them not one ever has had this problem Now here I am stuck with a stupid vehicle that I already hate

Gravity doesn't discriminate. Every vehicle I've ever had rolls when out of park, unless sitting on a level surface. Keep your foot on the brake or the gas, depending on if you're moving or stopped.

Has stated above never ever ever ever ever had a problem with any other vehicle. I just got rid of a 2015 Toyota SR5. It was totaled in a wreck wish I had it back. It was the best truck ever

Your banner says you have a Sport. (The OR and Pro have a slightly different brake hold than Sport, SR%, or Limited.)

On the Sport, there is a two second brake hold if you release the brakes while stopped. The hold is cancelled the instant you touch the gas pedal or if the two seconds expire. Make triple sure you aren't fat-footing the pedal, its easy to do.

Edit, also, I find that such systems are easier to live with if I pretend they aren't there. They are nice as a backup against bad behavior, but I know in my heart that I should not rely on them.

Fat-footing is when you think you are on the brake but the outside arch of your sneaker still inadvertently catches an edge of the gas pedal. Its something that I have caught myself doing on occasion.

I've got a 2021 Sport AT and can attest to the 2 second hold that is cancelled the second I apply the gas pedal.

EDIT: I can attest to @Rock Lobster humor...and that avatar that has you wondering if he's staring at you! (wink-wink) lol

Thanks Rusty and I know you’re right, so I’m at the boat ramp I’ll let my foot off the break. I’ll try to give it a little gas and it starts to roll rolled back about five or 6 feet had to give it in my opinion too much gas I shouldn’t have to jerk my boat out of the water. I’m just saying

In that instance you can apply the hand brake, step on the throttle lightly until the engine is pulling against the brake then ease it off. New vehicle = new technique to do a job.

I thought I already posted this. Thanks Rusty and I know you are absolutely correct but very first time out to the boat ramp I’m trying to pull my boat out of the water. I put it in drive take my foot off the break and give it a little bit of gas and I start rolling backwards 5 to 6 feet Good thing it was not a steeper ramp nor was I backed into where the tires were in the water. I give it a little bit of gas and I’m still rolling back so I have to give it in my opinion too much gas to get it moving I should not have to jerk my boat out of the water. I’m just saying

You have exactly the correct answer Rusty, but like I say, you don’t know till you know, could’ve sunk the truck. I was posting mine while you were writing yours

I've been driving for a while. Every vehicle I've owned over the last 50 years will roll back on a steep hill with the foot off the brake. Some will hold better than others on a mild grade, but they all roll if the hill is steep enough, especially with the weight of a trailer behind it. It's not a problem, just a fact.

Granted, I've never owned one of the newer vehicles with hill start assist.

While I do everything in my power to avoid driving vehicles with autotragic transmissions, I travel a lot and frequently drive rentals, and here in the States that typically means slushbox/CVT type transmissions (fortunately when I'm abroad I can still rent cars with three pedals under the dash); with that said, every car with an automatic I've ever driven would roll backwards when in Drive, assuming the hill was steep enough to cause more rearward energy than the engine/torque converter/transmission combination was generating in the opposite direction. I have no idea what you've been driving, but this is a fact of life, virtually ALL automatic transmissions will roll backwards when given enough incentive.

Handbrake is the way to go in that case.

So from what you are saying I think that you got caught by that little bit of dead-space between touching the pedal and giving it enough beans to overcome the hill. It's a sensitive bugger, as soon as you barely feather-touch it, its going to release the brake hold on you.

All automatic trans vehicles will roll backwards on steep hills, unless they have some electronic hill assist crap. What you can do is use two feet ,one on brake one on gas. It's pretty simple. Same applies if your backing up a steep hill and let off the gas truck will roll forward.
