150k...Maintenance Tips?

I'm about to hit 150k on my 96 Taco(2.7L) and figured on replacing all the belts and two radiator hoses with Toyota stuff. I will also attempt to replace the fan clutch as its constantly on.

Is there anything else I should go after while I'm at it?

Diff oil... If it's never been done before.

 

when's the last time you did spark plugs, fuel filter, diff oils, tranny oil?

 

Yeah, fluids, sparkplugs, sparkplug wires if you feel so inclined.

 

Thanks for the feedback so far...plugs and wires were around 110k. I did the tranny, transfer case, and diff(front and rear) at 130k. Coolant at the same time.


What about brake fluid? Never touched

 

yeah go ahead and change that out, brake fluid absorbs water over time and can corrode things. Also have you been lubing the U-joints?

 

I'm at 130K and thinking about doing a road trip home this summer right after graduation.

Unfortunately, I don't really have a place I can safely drain fluids (in city on campus). How much "should" getting my truck serviced cost?

As much as I hate paying mechanics to do work for me, I don't have much choice until I get my own place.

 

i got my transmission oil changed for 60 bucks at valvoline I didnt really want to mess with the transmission myself but the Toyota requires a synthetic gear oil. witch is more expensive

 

Easy as pie to DIY...just a drain and refill. I did my tranny/tc/difs when I did my clutch.

 

And get in the group buy for some new leaf springs please haha

 

I did a major tune up recently here in Alaska last week: replaced alternator belt, changed out all fluids, including front/rear diffs, transfer case, brake fluid (I did the oil myself the week before), (left the power steering fluid alone), lubed the u-joints along the drive train, rotated the tires, tried to repack the wheel bearings, but they're sealed, let's see...what else did we do? Inspected a bunch of stuff. Cost? Three hours, total bill was $416, largely because of the 10 quarts of synthetic Valvoline

$28 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 oil were over $12 each (OUCH!).

And my mechanic let me both help, watch and learn. Next up next week: new OME suspension before I take her on the road this summer! I'm learning LOTS.

 

i am about 700 miles away from this milestone on 3.4 MT
currently in the middle of oil n filter changes interval, did not time it properly lol

maybe could do the MT fluid

what other tips for these days of ad-hoc maintenance... thanks to the 2nd gens for this diatribe

 

that old fuel filter could possibly be a good 1 to attempt to change out, its been on there awhile

 

Easy to change out the fuel filter!!

 

On the v6 yeah, I hear on the 4cyl its more tricky

 

Check valve clearances.

 

At least $100/Hour + parts. Don't take it to the quick oil change places and don't use the absolute cheapest mechanic.

how much gasoline in my mouth injested will it take to put me in the hospitial or worse?

Gasoline and motor oil are good for you!!

 

Every oil change- turkey baste the brake fluid reservoir out and in with the new. Mines always clear. Same with power steering fluid reservoir.
Every 10k drop the tranny fluid drain plug- 4 qts and refill with new. Once a year or 6 months drain the radiator and refill with a gallon. Doing these and your oil changes around 5k keeps everything good to go.
