Sadly, students are no longer taught to understand just how important Washington was.

Washington had immense prestige, not only for winning the Revolutionary War, but because after the victory he resigned his command voluntarily.
When Britain's King George III heard of it he supposedly said: "If he does that, he is the greatest man alive".
Many thought, in Britain and America, that he would make himself King.

Some of his contemporaries called him "The Indispensable Man".
He presided at the Constitutional Convention, and his prestige assured its adoption.
There is room to think that it would not have been ratified save for the fact that everyone assumed he would be the first President of the United States.
Washington personally organized the Executive branch and set many precedents that his successors followed.

As to Lincoln, the case is rather more evident.
He saved the Union.
