Think of it this way, how would you hold from rolling back with a standard transmission with a clutch?
One foot on brake or E brake on and start the actions to engage forward motion then and only then let off the brake.
Drivers Ed back in 69 was a 3 speed manual, rollback in a hill was not tolerated.
    Think that way.

I wish my ‘17 OR AT would let me roll backwards in drive like my 2002 OR 1st Gen did. If you are an off-roader, you know what I’m talking about, especially when you’re going up a steep hill and need to get a second run at a step or something. It is dangerous to have to put the truck into reverse in order to back up on a steep hill, if you do that all you have left are your brakes to stop you from rolling backwards.

But this is America, where automatic transmissions are supposed to remove all critical thinking from the user’s list of responsibilities.

OP just sell the Tacoma and buy a Chevy 2500, you’ll never worry about this again.

    Good "food for thought!"

Applying that principle to an AT is the challenge for some expecting more from that transmission.

Still....it takes practice once the condition is known ahead of time.

I've launched more boats than Helen of Troy, while driving everything from 1 ton duallys to Chevy S-10s to a Lincoln Town Car.

Not putting the car in the lake has never been a challenge.

Just like any other situation where you want the vehicle to go forward and not backwards...if using an AT, apply the brake with your left foot. Put it in drive or low. Apply gas with your right foot. You can feel that point where the vehicle starts to strain against the brake. Ease out on the brake pedal. Proceed up the ramp with no muss-no-fuss.

Hah, Driver’s ed in the late 70’s with a three on the tree pickup and ‘forced’ to drive with a U-Haul trailer in the back. Mr. Johnson was very mean to us, or so we thought, until we actually realized he was teaching us practical skills for our adult lives!

If you press gas and brake at the same time on a 3rd Gen, it will throw a warning message.

Pretty much standard operation for any and all cars and trucks for the last 40 years I’ve been driving.

Handbrakes are awesome……learn how to use one. Depend on YOUR abilities, not some darn computer BS.

It is bad for any auto to try to hold it's position on a hill in gear, with no brake applied. If you did it with a manual it would work but, at the expense of your clutch. Just dont do it. Ski

    Yeah.
So how much gas were you giving it? You may want to have your transmission fluid level checked -- if it's low and the transmission is still warming up, it will slip more. It should stop rolling pretty quickly once some RPM's are applied, though. I just use the hand brake (and am glad they moved it from the floor).

change the stall speed of the converter
Your factory converter stalls at 1800 rpm .
You could install a Low rpm torque converter (1200 rpm ) but the truck will be a turtle off the line
