Hi guys. I’m sure this question has been covered a million times, but I could not find what I was looking for in search.

I took the stock sensors from the TRD OR wheels and put them in a set of 4Runner OR wheels. No issue. My friend bought a 23 TRD OR. My truck is up on its lease and he bought my 4Runner OR wheels, tires, sensors and I’m taking his stock OR wheels, tires and sensors.

So now, his 23 TPMS are on my 21. No warnings on either truck but the tire pressures are blank. I heard about a reset that someone did with the truck in accessory mode, but wanted to check here. They also mentioned that I think from 2020 and up, if it’s the same part numbers that they don’t have to be programmed and the ECU goes through a learning process to recognize the different sensors. Is this accurate in any way?

    Thanks.

I don't know about the Tacoma, but the 4Runner changed sensors in 2020. The way to tell the difference is that the new sensors have rubber valve stems instead of metal. The rubber stemmed sensors can be reprogrammed.

To reprogram on the 4Runner there's a feature reached through the center display within the gauges. It's a simple procedure and it just requires some driving to get the sensors reprogrammed. The reprogram can take a while, so if it works on the Tacoma have some patience. Check the owner's manual, as this process was detailed in mine.

3rd Gen Tacomas only read/see four sensor id#s which are programmed to the ECU. You will need to have the truck programmed to see the new sensors.
These trucks do not self learn new sensor id#s.

The OM tells you what the TPMS button, at your left knee, does.
