yeah I was thinking the tolerance of an automotive grade latch is pretty tight for the bumper swingouts, but even jeep just uses a slam latch, and they probably have all the problems everyone has with saggy swingouts lol.

designing a pinned block or more likely just seeing how long a slam latch holds might be what I do

The latch on that Jeep is going to be better than anything you can buy in the aftermarket but also those gates are really light and double hinged and have restrictions on tire size

Not a great picture but aluminess uses these latches, just slam it closed and it locks closed, small handle to release it. I'm a big fan of it, only issue is i due lube it with WD40 a couple times a year as it does gum up over time and can fail to completely latch without a hard slam.

yeah double hinged will reduce sag, and moment deflection, TG weight I don't think is an important factor, only stiffness, Tire size restriction the aftermarket takes care of without changing the latch mechanism from my own quick browsing.

I think a standard automotive striker/latch would be comparable quality to the jeep one, but notably not as well protected from the elements without additional effort, looks like this is what the Alumees latch is trying to do... and based on their design, moment deflection would impact the latch alignment more than if the latch were centered on the base tube.

I have spares of the aluminess one, they're a common aftermarket striker and very thin/weak, I'll send em to you if you want em. I got them and immediately dropped my plans with them and at the time couldn't find a better striker latch. It's really no surprise they hang up and develop play, it's one of the only strikers on the market really so you can't blame Aluminess. I do think your point about stiffness is on point but you can't ignore weight with the Jeep argument because it's only stiff enough to support a rather light assembly, overlanding types put quite a bit of bullshit out on swingouts.

I bet your right on weight, being a dual swinq made of aluminum, even with a full 33" tire in it doesn't weight a ton.

Good God I went and priced out my rear bumper while looking up that latch... over $5k... just to do up all the bumpers and ladder at today's prices is $10k  looks like they don't list the pre 08s bumpers anymore so I would have to convert to the newer nose to get a new bumper. Needless to say, I gotta try to not destroy the ones I've got.

I got the ladder for my van from them and it stung, but the quality couldn't be argued with, so when I got my 1st gen I remember checking them out for a rear bumper and it was...intense. I don't even think they make them anymore, and I don't blame 'em.

Anyone bought a rad from RockAuto? Good luck with packing?
My donkey turns 100K in just over 1K miles, gonna get it some bday gifts and Denso rads are on Prime now for $150, Rock for $136.
I've had them show up for other vehicles (straight from dealer parts sites) with a lot of bent fins and had to return/exchange, and Amazon would make that way easier.
Maybe I'm overthinking it for the $14 difference.

Edited, forgot I bought 3 there.

One for the Tacoma, one for the 4Runner, and one for the Land Cruiser.
