Hilux still can be produced in South America... Not in USA anymore which discontinued in '95. Even Hilux got discontinued in 2005 in Japan. I got confused at first because I thought they are no longer producing them after '95. Then I just found out that they still can be sold in South America.

I like Tacoma front end better than 2014 Hilux front end but I like new '24 Hilux over 2014 Hilux:

That's because in Japanese 'i's are pronounced 'eee'.
But the origin of the word is High + Luxury.

But even in Japanese, Hilux is parsed out 'hairukkusu' so Hi (like high) and lux (like lucks)

"The Hilux was offered as a replacement to the Toyota Crown, Toyota Corona, and Toyota Corona Mark II based pickup trucks in Japan, as the Crown, Corona, and Corona Mark II were repositioned as passenger sedans. In spite of the name "Hilux", it was a luxury vehicle only when compared to the Stout."

Wish I could get one of those barebones new stouts stateside... so cheap...

Also made in Thailand and in South Africa if my memory isn't wrong. And the Hilux is sold again in Japan too for the last few years, I believe. Hiluxes are sold all over the world.

The name "Hilux" got dropped in the USA circa 1972. All of the small trucks from 1973-ish until the launch of the Tacoma in 1995 were called Toyota "Truck" or "Pickup".

This one is likely to end with a whimper, not a bang, of course. The chances of it being anything but a debadged Tacoma are so small as to be insignificant. Possibly a Tijuana paint job after a bad crunch, where removing the doors and all the trim is the way most of them are done south of San Diego...

Ya know what, I bet OP does have a hilux and here’s why:

    1. he is on tacomaworld.com. I am going to make the assumption he knows that Tacomas exist and therefore he probably knows that a Tacoma is a Toyota pickup truck.

    2. if he bought a Tacoma, MOST LIKELY, their would be a Tacoma badge on the truck. OP says he has looked over the truck and was not able to identify.

    3. car salesman never lie

OP, definitely has a hilux 100%

Yep! Especially since his friend used a conclusive test and reported "my Hilux is different in how it handles and accelerates, etc. but we still don't know for sure". Handling and acceleration are probably how many of us would differentiate Tacomas from Hiluxes, right?

The one thousand other clues don't matter once one has checked out handling and acceleration. :D

Is he saying that he somehow came into possession of a Mexican Hilux that has been somehow brought into the US and debadged in hopes of passing it off as an American vehicle?

That's my favorite part "My buddy owns fleet tacomas and he says it handles different" If your truck looks like his trucks, guess what, It's a tacoma.

I know..it's just not the most abundant engine choice for Hiluxs.... the diesels far outnumber the v6s.... I'm sure there's actually more 2tr-fe Hiluxes out there than the gas v6 too
