Scam alert

I got a call yesterday from a guy claiming to be a representative of Toyota’s extended warranty wanting to know if I wanted to extend the warranty on my 2021 Tacoma. He knew my name and that I had not purchased the extended warranty thru the dealer when I purchased the USED truck. When I started to question him about the dealer I had purchased the truck through, he kept on telling me he was the Toyota representative. When I told him I had purchased an extended warranty from Jerry at Midwestern Super store he responded that it did not show up on his files at which point I told him I had my paperwork for the purchase and hung up on him. How do they get the purchase date, my name and home phone number. When I googled the phone number he had called from it said this number was related to several scams.

 

I just don’t answer calls from numbers that I don’t have saved. If it’s someone I need to talk to, they will leave a voicemail and you can tell from the voicemail if it’s a scam or not.

If you have an iPhone, there’s a setting that silences unknown callers. I’ve found that setting to be very helpful.

 

I wouldn’t be surprised if the dealer or whoever you bought your truck from sold client information.

 

Many states' DMV records are available publicly. This could show your name, address, phone number, price paid, date, if you registered it on time, vehicle details...or any combination thereof. They will call everyone and assume they didn't buy an extended warranty. That's why they call it phishing.

 

They apparently spoofed a phone number with a local area code and caught me off guard so I answered it. Do not have any idea how they spoof a phone number or how they got the info they did.

 

DMVs also sells info. Everyone sells info.

 

Yep, your purchase data is out there. BTW OP, that jar of mayo in your fridge is about to expire.

 

I believe there are websites and apps that you can use to spoof phone numbers. Unfortunately it’s very easy to do.

I have a phone number from an area code far away. I don't know anyone in that area code so anytime I get a phone call from that area code, it's always a scam or a wrong number. I just ignore them.

I've lived in many places, but have kept a US number for decades. Even when I was abroad, people (with dated information) would ring claiming that I owed someone money, or some other scam. I got a call recently from a guy saying he was with a utility which I actually did contract with many years ago telling me that my payment had not been received and my bill was now past due - but I could conveniently pay over the phone...

He had real data (just way old) - I led him on a bit just to get him excited, then I told him that I actually lived at a location way far outside that utility's territory. Then it was silence. I stayed on. He quietly hung up.

If there was no catching, there wouldn't be fishing (or Phishing)...

 

I had a clown message me on instagram offered me $7,500 in BitCoin for 4 of my images that he wanted to turn into NFT's.
Wanted me to go to some site create an account blah blah.

I told him I don't play with funny money but I'd give him rights to those images for $3,500 cash plus throw in another 2 images of his choice.
I'd give him the raw images plus my edits in full size.
Chump didn't get back to me, I wonder why, I was offering him such a deal.

I get calls from Toyota about once a month wanting to buy my 2021, I tell them I'll take $75,000 in cash or will finance 50% of it
with approved credit.

And I get calls from people asking if I want to sell my house. I tell them I'll take 5.5 million in cash. ( it's worth about 450k )....

 

Check out Google Voice which is free to call or text within the US. I give my main cell number to family, friends, doctors etc. My Google Voice separate phone number is given to everyone else. I feel it is a great way to separate important calls and texts from less important ones.

Go watch the Documentary on Ed Snowden............that will literally blow your mind. For the last decade or so, NSA has been building gigantic warehouses just to store data. Like every phone call, email, text. Everything is public information.

I have harped on my mother to stop doing this as she ages, she is so MF'n nosey she just can't help but to answer every damn call. Aggravating.
