She's been teaching for 12 years already

She has her credentials in early childhood development and a few other things, and receives a stipend every year for it.

Her level of degree puts her at a higher pay rate as well doing the same job.

Last but not least, depending on the level of degree means different positions are made available to her.

She's already done after-hours teaching for soon-to-be teachers getting into SPED and she's considered doing the switch to that full-time.

So basically, she would teach teachers but in her specific field, if she wanted to.

That's the dream right there for teachers. Otherwise actual SPED teaching is just where they put teachers they want to retire here or use it as a crucible to burn out new ones that never would have lasted. There are of course the special few that actually really love being a sped teacher and make it their career, they're built different.

I wanted to place some emphasis on this.

It really takes a unique individual to want to be a SPED teacher, and those that have met my wife well...they'll share their thoughts on the kind of person she is.

The thing about being a SPED teacher in CA is a double edged sword; on one hand, there are tons of rules and regulations enforced by the state (and added ones at the district level) that restrict a teacher from being a SPED teacher.

Those not meeting the qualifications really just turn to be an aid and my wife has had her fair share of crappy one's she's had to dismiss.

On the otherhand, because of those rules and regulations, simply wanting to be a teacher, and qualifying to be as such isn't enough and that just creates an even larger demand.

The legal protections (for parents, a good thing) are largely one of the main reasons why even those that do qualify to be SPED teachers choose not to. Not doing things by the book (subject to auditing) can land huge pentalties against a school by itself.

Yeah I might be talking up my wife and what she does, but it's because it's such a thankless job and they have so much going against them.

Regular teachers? Many just plain suck.

    @Speedytech7

You working at a school district, is it different where you're at in regards to laws and regulations relating to SPED?

General education teachers can be fined per occurrence simply for not attending an IEP meeting (sometimes held during or after school hours) for the child that's in their class.

SPED teachers, the psych, and other specific staff can also be fined and held responsible for IEP's not done up correctly and not meeting a child's needs if said child does not require placement elsewhere and is to stay at that school. I mean there's a ton of other stuff too and when my wife had to move to another school, there was so much shit she had to fix from the previous SPED teacher that was there.

Teachers have always made shit pay, but consider the benefits they get which makes up for some of it.

I don't know of any teacher making only $50k and having a master's, most I've met out here (at get togethers etc) just have a bachelor's and make way more than that even in the cheaper areas to live.

But I mean, could be worse right? Imagine working at a coffee shop and not using said degree :notsure:

Plus you get all the holidays off that the kids get, including summers if you aren't teaching over summer

It's a good career for people with kids because you're basically on the same schedule as them. But teachers do have to take a lot of it home and work outside of the classroom that's for sure. Once my mom started teaching it felt like all she was doing most nights was grading papers

Her resolution some almost 2 years ago was not to bring home any work; she hasn't had to do that the entire time we've lived here :bananadance:

GF was in early ed for a while, loved the work, hated the way the school was run and the pay was absolutely dismal. She’s moved on to other career opportunities and not goin back.

Ugh yeah staffing alone could make things shitty

We dealt with that the first year; the gen ed teachers all there were there for years, and all knew each other very well

They also only have one teacher per grade, if that tells you how small it is

My wife coming in, as pretty much the only minority there, and putting her foot down on the way shit was being run, made people become really abrasive towards her

Fast forward to now and she's been included as part of this donation the school receives every year and more as it's saved the school from a lot of trouble the last SPED teacher would've gotten them into

The common phrase she dealt with the first year was "I didn't know that's how it was supposed to be..." or "...that's not how so and so did things"

Helped that the vice principal was new too and even though they get "voted out" by staff, she stuck through it as she brought to light the issues the past SPED teacher caused for the school

Learned so much about teaching I'm like fuck, no wonder people don't wanna teach

And those that do I feel like, are waiting to retire out since they're so stuck in their ways but are there cause of how long they've been doing it

I know my mom got into it because after being a stay at home parent for years, it was a way for her to get into a decent paying gig/benefits that kept her on the same schedule as us three kids. She waited until we were all in high school though

I know from her experience that the nicer teaching jobs, at least in this area can be really tough to get into when you're starting out and most new teachers have to work their way up from the shitty gigs.

She ended up moving to Palm Springs for 2 years just to teach at some reform high school in Palm Desert, which I'm sure you know is not a very nice place lol. It was one of those schools for troubled teens that can't be in normal public schools anymore and she had to deal with all kinds of awful shit there.

After a few years there though a lot of better teaching opportunities opened up for her with the experience, that's when she moved to Monterey.

Oh dude she did a summer gig out in Marina when she stayed with me the whole summer at my apartment

She had staff begging and pleading her to relocate

But before all that and before we met, yeah she did softball coaching, volunteered at a lot of troubled youth groups, volunteer work for a foster agency, and more

Like you said, a lot of that experience really helps and translates to making you a desirable candidate versus a teacher having been at one school for 10+ years; that teacher normally stays there to retire

yeah I think my last post was more directed at Jaxon's comment about why they get their Masters only to take up a lower paying gig, it's usually just about getting their foot in the door and working up

I'm just glad (but slightly afraid) of what's to come when Theo's in school

Being the at-home parent I'll be really involved with what's going on at his school, especially with Stephanie's help

At the same time, hope we get 'good teachers' as we go along
