The days of being able to go the dealer and pick out the exact color and model of the vehicle you want from the 100 on the lot will be back soon. It already is for some manufacturers. There’s certainly no shortage of gladiators, tundras or rams.

With interest rates higher making dealer flooring costs higher this should also motivate dealers to move vehicles as inventory grows.

If you want a new Tacoma, then walk, don’t run. Or crawl. Don’t get on a list, don’t pay anybody a deposit, and for love of Pete don’t gift any Sales Manager with a crazy market adjustment on top of an already high MSRP. He will take your money, laugh at you as you drive off the lot, and buy a new boat in your honor.

It is not November 2022. Chips aplenty, inventories are getting uncomfortable, even in Toyota-land. Just wait, make several dealers compete for your business, get a very nice truck right off the lot, keep the extra cash.

If you want a hybrid, arrive at the dealer shortly after midnight. Bring a suitcase of cash, plus spare kidney. Take the keys, don’t ask any questions..

+870,000 cars on lots yoy. It's happening. Just not quite as fast as OP thought. Toyota is still leading in lowest days of inventory but moving in the correct direction for consumers. Discounts are up, transaction prices are down. Slow and glacial.

I was bored and charted data from the allocation sheet.

Add = new vin on allocation sheet.
Sold = vin's on sold tab, does not factor presold ones. May add a presold line if i do this again.
Add and Sold use left scale. Inventory and production use right scale.

    Enjoy. Or not.

I think the new world order is going to be low volume, high profit for big automakers. We have reached peak auto. I doubt things will return to affordable ever again.

You’re gonna walk into a dealership and place an order for a car that you can’t test drive, that you will take delivery of in 3 to 6 months, in a color you may not want, optioned in a way you don’t want, at MSRP if you’re lucky, and mortgaged over 7 to 9 years at stupid high APR. I’ve been there. It’s like being back under communist rule, the cars just aren’t as shitty.

i disagree. we added 870,000 cars to dealer inventory year over year. days of inventory has been creeping up month over month over month and now stands in the 80 range. toyota is still super low relative to teh industry, but they are creeping up month over month over month just like everyone else. discounts have doubled in the last year, and i would expect to double again over the next year if inventory keeps climbing the way it did over the past year.
