So, Ryan allegedly made inappropriate comments to some guy's sister, and rumors got out of control. This guy was smoking weed with a bunch of his friends, and in their infinite wisdom, they decided to drive high over to Ryan's house and confront him. The overprotective brother got out of the car and confronted Ryan in a hostile manner. Ryan was much larger than the aggressor, not high, and clearly a lot more intelligent. He grabbed the guy in a bear hug, totally immobilizing him, and told him to calm down. This guy agreed to calm down, but when Ryan let him go, he tried to attack him again; Ryan grabbed him again and held him. Once again, the guy said he would be cool, but then tried to attack Ryan yet again. I think this only happened twice before Ryan shoved the guy in self-defense; Ryan, as stated above, was HUGE. He had no intention of hurting the guy, but he that's not how things played out...

If I remember correctly, the aggressor went to the ground, smashed his head on the curb, and got it wedged between the curb and the bumper of a parked car. This broke his neck and he paralyzed; I have no idea if he was paralyzed from the neck down or just the waist down, but he was fucked up, for lack of a better term. The police did a thorough investigation, and Ryan's actions were deemed to be in self-defense, so he didn't face any legal consequences.

Unfortunately, the guy who broke his neck was associated with gang members in Washington, DC; these guys knew where Ryan lived and wanted to kill him, so Ryan had to lay low for a while. I do seem to remember that he came back to school weeks later, but I didn't him often after that. I always got along with Ryan, and hope he found the right path in life.

    But then it wouldn't be a Tacoma. I'd be a "Mini-Tundra".

You guys would have loved my high school. Security guard (big dude) was known to lay out “unruly” students. Like full speed body slam into a locker. And yes, the people who got that treatment did typically deserve it.

From what I hear, there is not much rule left in that school. And I didn’t graduate that long ago…

    Graduated in 2002.
There were no security guards until my sophomore year of high school.
Columbine happened when I was in high school.

Sometimes. Sometimes a little authority goes to the head. Or sometimes there's a deeper lesson.

My college economics teacher, Mr. John Murgo is a classic case. Took attendance by last name and I swear the tone of voice didn't change once all semester. He had a rule where if you wore a hat or head covering of any kind to class, 3 pts off the next test grade. People thought it was dumb (as did I), but I thought about it...college is preparing me for life. I don't wear my hat when I sit down in the office. That and I suspect he was driving home another lesson that life isn't always your way, you might have to do things you think are stupid but it's not always your choice to set the rules. Sadly that's so true in that 24 yrs of working in a professional office I've seen that adults cannot decide what is work appropriate.

He was a tough grader. My friend in the student life office even said your grade you get there is probably one letter less than anyone else. But as the closing of the syllabus for the class said "the objective for the student is to challenge themselves, learn the material, and EARN a high grade"

Because the truck doesn't talk back as much?

I cannot imagine, man. 1991 graduate here. I went to private school so we didn't have security.

We've never talked exactly about that day, but seeing the world in many ways through the eyes of my nephew who is a few weeks from turning 21 is a revelation in a lot of lights. I'll never forget him at 9 asking how I learned about cars. I told him "read a lot of books, learned from Grandpa and some friends, and just tried to figure it out myself". He asked why didn't I just use the Internet. I told him it didn't exist. His eyes popped out and was convinced I was lying, as he's playing on his brand new iPhone.
