My manual 22 trd pro with 29k stalled out on the highway this morning. I had it towed to the Toyota dealership and after diagnostics I was told my clutch was toast. I don't tow anything, just normal every day driving. A friend said that his buddies truck did the same thing with 19k. Dealer said that it was normal wear and tear and so it was not covered under warranty. I was told the same. My buddy told me about the premature clutch prior and I thought his buddy was abusing the clutch but then it happend to mines. Anyone have similar issues with their manual?

What’s do you mean by “stalled out”, did the engine die? usually a worn clutch will slip, which would allow the engine to spin freely.
Now a bad clutch slave would prevent the clutch from disengaging,,, which would stall the engine.

I would say that that's not "Normal" at all.
The truck is either being used outside of "Normal" usage, defective, or is being used "improperly"

1st gen - it's got a built engine, a turbo, and waaaaaaay too much to list. 3rd gen - basic-bitch lift, S/C, Pro Wheels
19 TRDOR here currently at about 35K miles, supercharged since 12K, and tow on the reg... no hint of clutch wear or impending failure. Seems pretty odd to me... I also did the accumulator delete mod but that was *maybe* 1K miles ago.

Do you drive with your foot resting on the clutch pedal?

62k miles on my clutch with 45k of them with the accumulator deleted.

Sorry for the bad explanation. Couldn't shift into gear.

If you don't think it was caused by you, Then I'd look for what caused the problem.
No need in fixing it, if it isn't "fixed". It will only happen again.

I'd start looking for a problem.

You mean it physically would not go into gear?
Or the it went into gear but the disk was slipping?

They don't typically go "bad" all at once.

Sounds like you have an issue.

I get some clutch slip when backing up and in 1st sometimes. That is due to towing and smoking the clutch offroad. 37k miles. Other than that, it has no signs of failure. I can't say that your case is normal wear and tear with that few miles.

Do you have mechanical breakdown insurance through your auto insurance carrier? I know that Geico's will cover a clutch if the warranty does not......

Can we get more info than “it’s toast”? What part of it is toast? If it’s worn friction band, I don’t see how that would stall the motor. Any photos from the diagnosing dealer?

The only premature failures I really know of are an occasional friction band doesn’t hold up, or the TOB starts making noise. But again, we need to know what really went bad, not just that the entire clutch is toast. That doesn’t really tell anything.

Edit: after saying it wouldn’t go into gear, my guess is it was a faulty pressure plate. Probably just an unfortunate defect. Certainly not common.

It's puking friction material in the picture. I think the post above is right when they say it is a freak failure unfortunately.

Is this your first manual transmission vehicle? 29k is way below service life.

usually that means a hydraulic issue (master and slave) not pushing the release bearing far enough

But the above pic points toward something in the clutch unit itself. I doubt the disc wore down abnormally fast, it probably exploded. Or the pressure plate cracked and chewed up the disc
