Music History Trivia... with Gritto

The scene: the recording session for the first Mahavishnu Orchestra album, The Inner Mounting Flame
Several girlfriends of band members and studio technicians attended.
None of them could endure it and fled in tears, terrified.

Why was that?

But first, some back story

John McLaughlin was the premier session guitarist in 1960s London.
Mentor to Jimmy Page, also a renowned session player in his own right before forming Led Zeppelin.
Member of the renowned (pre-fusion) jazz band Tony Williams Lifetime.
Played with Miles Davis, who told him he needed to form his own band.

McLaughlin was at that time (1971) interested in combining elements of Jazz, Rock and Indian classical Ragas.
He was also entering his "Spiritual" phase.

McLaughlin formed a band of true virtuosos:
Jan Hammer (Miami Vice music, anyone?) on keyboards.
Billy Cobham on percussion.
Jerry Goodman on violin.
Rick Laird, bass guitar.

Something happened at the recording session that can only be called lightning in a bottle.
The band members became hyper competitive.

The recording session was only scheduled for two days.
It was rather bare bones, with few of the studio recording techniques that would become common a little later.
Billy Cobham did not have his full drum kit.
Jan Hammer had not yet acquired a synthesizer, having only an electric piano.

McLaughlin made it clear he was looking to push the boundaries and produce something with intensity, and the band responded.
They insisted on playing at full volume, and that first day the production engineer quit in disgust.
They had to start over.
Now it was down to one single day.

What came of it was the first so-called "Jazz Fusion" album.
It's dark and menacing, and it's intense alright.
The Inner Mounting Flame is an apt title.
It's also very raw, with no studio tricks on it.

Listen to this at the highest volume you can stand.
You'll understand why those women were so shattered by witnessing the session.
No one had ever heard anything like it in 1971.
