Are all the dealers charging $400 to put the VIN on the cats?

Or is that just a local thing?

Thats just a dealer thing. Its a way for them to add something on and charge you more for it...

Had a dealer earlier that didn’t want to take off dealer installed Tint and Ceramic coating. $2100 for the 2. Then proceeded to tell me they still have a great price compared to other dealers and that it isn’t a dealer markup

Ask the dealer if ceramic coating will keep the Toyota paint from flaking off.

By the end of the whole thing I told him take both off or I’m not buying. Technically it’s not a dealer markup but it kind of is because it’s on all cars no exceptions. Regardless the dude was mad because at the end he said “there’s a reason you’re looking elsewhere than California, because Tacomas are better priced here. I chuckled because I’ve talked to a small handful from the Northwest and they’re way cheaper than AZ

I like to be a little snarky with a dealer I know I won’t be buying from. When they tell me their ceramic coating is great, I like to bring up the fact the TW members have had paint flake off.

It was worth a shot. I think I beat them to their listing because last night it was $46660 and this morning they added $2K to it. I’m gonna have to use that one next time I like that. I haven’t had any luck in your neck of the woods so I came back closer to home.

Had the same thing w/some other dealer add-ons. When I pushed back, the dealership said it was better than ADM because I got something in return. I think many dealers have received a ton of inquiries on the new Taco and are taking advantage of supply/demand. Another dealership I visited with a truck on the lot with $5k ADM instantly removed it if I was willing to make a deal that day. I get it, but good grief.

Unfortunately that’s the truth if I don’t buy it someone else will. It’s crazy to me that there are dealers adding all these mandatory add ons and people are actually paying for these things they could get for cheaper and probably higher quality than the dealership. They are 100 percent taking advantage of the situation

I’m sure that $2100 “ceramic coating” also came out of a spray bottle over the course of 10 minutes of wiping down the vehicle too.

Ceramic coating is a great add on because you can't tell if it's there or not. It's like paying $40/lb for farmed salmon that's labeled as wild salmon.

Not seen that one yet, but as soon as they sell the first one with it, it will spread like a virus.

I love how every thread in here ends up with guys bragging about "giving the salesman a hard time".

Lol, like they give a shit about your little tirade. They hear the same lines from tire kickers all day long

Don’t understand the point of this practice … the thief isn’t going to take the time to see if it has an engraving on it . They will just cut it off then later realize they can’t sell it . Meanwhile u are still out of a cat and have to replace the whole exhaust system .. it’s not like u get it back and u are going to weld it back on lol .

The cats are pretty well packed in. This would not be a quick sawzall removal operation.

What exactly is the purpose of etching a VIN on your catalytic converter?

It’s not going to stop it from being stolen and it’s not like you’re going to recover it because police do nothing about catalytic theft, and the first thing thieves are going to do when they get it is to crack it open line magical crackhead treasure to get all the precious metals inside it.
