Seems more like Kentucky than Maryland. An Army buddy of mine was from Westminster, MD, and he didn't have that kind of accent, his was slightly "New Jersey", if you are familiar with that accent.

When they say Maryland, they really mean the area around Baltimore who talks like this.

 

Another Army buddy of mine was from a small town in southern Tennessee. Now his accent was thick

Pretty thick in Arkansas too.

I was on a long road trip on I-40.
Stopped in West Memphis for gas and honest, I couldn't understand the cashier gal

Now, my Mother's side of the family are in the Deep South, so it's not like I'd never heard a southern accent before.

It's pretty thick in West Virginia as well, and gets thicker as you go from northeast to southwest.
But at least you can understand them.
