Dude I’m going to be real and just say it. Please read everything I post in a paragraph and not just bits and pieces. There is a shortage of used 1150 and similar socket motherboards because motherboards fail at a higher rate than CPUs. That was my whole point that you missed twice.

There’s plenty of conversion build threads out there.

He's a nice guy but a bit of a downer, I'd rather just go home and drink while working on something in the shop.

Good to hear from Jimmie again; just providing an update he's doing well (enough) as he states

    Just busy working!

In general CPUs tend to outlive motherboards, I’m talking after 6+ years. I see this at a mass scale at work and it’s also the general consensus in the tech industry. I figure it has to do with all the failure points on a motherboard (capacitors, traces, voltage regulators, etc.) vs a CPU.

Like I said last night LinusTechTips did a video on it. I’d start watching at like 4:45. He had a newer video but I couldn’t find it.
    https://youtu.be/QlR1LVMREf4?feature=shared

It leads to an increased demand for those older motherboards as people want to reuse their CPU that is still good. But 6+ years later and those boards have been out of production for a while. This leads to people marking up their functional name brand motherboards on eBay, Amazon, Facebook marketplace, etc. Which allowed for the silly Chinese recycled “new” boards to have a spot in the market.

I’ve never had a CPU fail but I’ve had over a dozen motherboards die since I got into this hobby as a kid. This experience is echoed with many of my friends and coworkers. My current setup is 9 years old and I guarantee the first thing to go will be the Z170/1151 motherboard.

    Ah I found it. @Kwikvette

I’m not knocking running old stuff, like I said my setup is super old now. It’s just an interesting discussion once parts start dying. Start watching this one at like 4:15. I don’t even like Linus but he explains the issue better than most.

Lol the dude in the background laughing at the start of the video

Thanks for this, I'll watch it now

But yeah I'm definitely aware CPU's rarely die, and really they can run indefinitely if kept cool enough

I wonder how much of our e-waste (from all our upgrades) are heading out overseas to either be resold to us or used out there; obviously enough for them to re-create Chinese motherboards that's nuts

Yeah and I think they take advantage of countries in South America and their heavy duty fees/taxes on luxury goods & electronics. People don’t upgrade their setups nearly as often there. They might have to rely on those Chinese boards if they can’t acquire a used one.

Like I know the PS2 was still super big down there into the 2010s and the last game released was in 2014 due to that. A PS3/PS4 was simply too expensive still.

You just reminded me, Canada is especially the same and they're just our neighbors to the north

The prices out there are fucking crazy for GPUs
