Immediately thought of you when I saw this

 

After some recent events due to my old man retiring and trying to get everything sorted out to be able to move back to the motherland this coming summer, thinking about filing for my American citizenship finally.

After almost 30 years of living here neither my parents nor I had any interest in getting it, but my old man is finding out that even though he did everything legally, paid his taxes and all of that, the rules and laws make it very difficult to be able to collect easily whatever little social security he's entitled to while he's living in Portugal.

So him and my mother are applying for it and based on things he's heard and found out, he suggested I apply for it as well. Not because I ever plan on doing what he's doing, but because of things that have to do with renewing my green card in the near future.

Having a bunch of mixed feelings and emotions about all of this.

 

Dual citizenship I assume?

 

Kind of... My understanding is that the US doesn't recognize dual citizenship, but Portugal does.

So in a way, yeah I guess. LOL

 

Yes, you can have dual citizenship with Portugal. I have it.

 

Yeah, I can have it because I'm already Portuguese.

But I think in the eyes of the American government, for some stuff (if not all) they don't recognize you being a dual citizen.

I may be wrong, or maybe don't know the full details, but pretty sure I remember hearing something about it.

Either way I'd still have my Portuguese one because I'm already Portuguese and was born there, and have my Portuguese passport, and I'd also have an American one if I did it.

 

And I think part of the "not recognizing" dual citizenship thing is that when I fly out of the country I'd have to use and show my US passport, as well as re-entering the country.

Not that it's a big deal. I'd just carry both passports when I go to Portugal. It's easier to enter Portugal with a Portuguese passport instead of an American one. And then easier to enter the US with an American passport instead of a Portuguese one.

My wife is Canadian by birth and became a US citizen about 35 years ago, took a while birth certificates etc. But it was worth it.

Food for thought.

Her first language is French so was a alien who spoke English, now she's an American who also speaks French.

Go for it you have earned it and some or those closed doors may open easier for you.

My Mother's side is from Quebec and getting citizenship is not as hard as I thought. Looked into it a few years ago and never went any further.

@Nuno do it while it's easier.

I've looked into dual citizenship, technically i qualify in 2 other & potentially 3 other countries - but, people die, documents get lost & it becomes near impossible to document your case. In this case more is better for you - do it while it's "easy". Have options in your future. It's like if your kids were born here, getting them citizenship there gets harder & harder as time & people pass - you'd want them to have options - give yourself options.

Get your birth certificate ASAP.

The reason I say this is that my wife's birth (1949) certificate is in French and at the time of her birth girls were automatically given the name of (Marie) (French Canadian Catholic) on the birth certificates, my wife didn't know this as she was applying in her given name. If took more Gov paperwork from Canada to straighten it out.

The males not to be outdone were automatically give the name (Joseph) on the birth certificate.
She was sworn in in Federal Court in Bridgeport, I was there with my mother, and it was great to see the people become American citizen's. Waiting for the new passport to arrive did take some time to arrive.

Enjoy the process as it's part of the Amercian experience.

The "not that I ever plan on doing what he's doing" part is a good reason to file, outside looking in. Not that easy of course but just the thing that sticks when I read this.

First sentence. Big time.

I went through hoops upon hoops a few years ago trying to prove my birth name as an adopted child while getting the Real ID. Worked out well in another way too but pain in the ass getting there.
