I know our Tacomas aren’t esoteric vehicles but I’m looking for any solid recommendations anyone may have for a mechanic in the western PA area with whom any Taco owner here has had really great luck with. I take my 2012 i4 5-speed SR5 to a local independent for this and that I’m not staying impressed with him. My engine runs fine but does not sound right especially compared to another i4 5 speed. He doesn’t seem too invested in digging in. So if I could find anything even close to a Tacoma whisperer then it might be worth the trip from Patterson Township! Thanks.

Good morning Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. Now I'd normally say tgif. But I've been off all week because I was sick. I'm working both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. But hey happy Friday to everyone else.

 

I don't. I'm in Beaver County and see a number of Tacos but since mine is relatively new, my maintenance consists of taking it to the dealer once a year for an oil change. Previously, for my other vehicles - none of which were a Toyota, I took it to Friend's in Center. John, who is the mechanic there is slow and always busy, but very good.

SO the other day I get pulled over by a State Police officer .,, shit what did I do? after the normal introduction. he cautioned me about driving with my parking lights on ( only)
I always or most of the time have light switch set to AUTO I tried to explain to him these are Toyota's version of daytime driving lights, I showed him what parking lights looked like in that switch position then back to auto I said the only option is to drive with headlights on. He suggested that I do that . ok officer sorry ..


But I don't want to really do that to extend bulb life.. WTF ?

Seems a little bit ridiculous. I swear some of these cops have nothing better to do.
I remember I got pulled over on my 04 cbr1000rr and the cop said I had a headlight out. Low beam is just 1 head light and high beam is both on. He told me I have to switch it back to how it came from factory. Which I replied this is how it came from factory. He still wrote a ticket out. It was thrown out in court.

 

Whattttt never heard of that. Many times I drive just with parking lights on, dusk , morning.. is this really a law ?

 

Dating back to my driver's ed course in high school I was always taught it is never legal to drive with your parking lights on. They are strictly to be used to illuminate a stationary vehicle. If the vehicle is being operated and in motion the regular lights are to be used.

I don't see anything specific prohibiting the use of parking lamps while driving in Title 75, but I'm also not a lawyer or expert in PA vehicle code

I'd suspect he was fishing. Feels like an illegal stop based on the details we have.

 

That statute kind of says LED bars on the bumper, or in the bumper, and/or ditch lights are illegal. Anyone else see that?

 

I'm neither a lawyer or a police officer but here's what I see in the document.

4302. Periods for requiring lighted lamps.

(a) General rule.--The operator of a vehicle upon a highway shall display the lighted head lamps and other lamps and illuminating devices required under this chapter for different

"lighted headlamps AND other lamps" That clearly states headlamps and not headlamps OR other lamps

 

I must be ignorant. Now I have to look this up.

:edit: and that's not new. I had Jeep friends in the late 90s who ran into this with their KC daylight setup all the time.

 

But it states they are to be mounted on the roof or roll bar. That's the bad part for me. And it'll be a challenge to cover an in-bumper LED bar.

 

Was the stop within 30 minutes of sunrise or sunset?

 

No. It was around noon. No citation was given. Just inconvenient. Like other poster said. Excuse to run the plates and sniff the cab.
