Can I put this in my TC?

I live in the Middle East so I need to ship this stuff here. Usually I put 80w-90 or 75w-85 or

75w-90 in my TC but I read someone that it’s bad for the TC so I’m gonna order this stuff.

but in the description it says it’s for manual transmissions. Mine is an automatic. Is that fine? Thanks.

The stuff you're already using is perfectly fine for the transfer case. Whoever says it's "bad" is wrong.

yes but I can’t find 75w anywhere. For some reason people don’t use it.
Also there’s a war here in lebanon so many it’s a supply issue.

GL5 does have sulfur in it since it's meant for extreme pressure situations like differentials. For that reason I do use a GL4 manual transmission oil in mine. However, GL5 was officially approved for the transfer case in the 2nd gen, despite the sulphur. Most GL5s have an inactive sulfur, which starts to act at higher temps than a t-case should reach. In short, it should be perfectly fine. 2nd gen and 3rd gen transfer cases are very similar, and a synchro is a synchro. They wouldn't have spec'd it.

75W-90 or 80W-90 over the stock 75W because the transfer case shifts more smoothly with it. 75W is fine and it will work, but it's an economy choice.

 

There's a reason they spec this specific oil. Some people claim it's the brass. It's not an economic choice - this is a differently formulated gear oil and is actually more expensive. Use what they say to use. And yes, the bottle has a cool spout.

 

It is a fuel economic choice. There is an article about developing the LF fluid. They did it for fuel economy. They wanted something thin for fuel economy and then bumped up the additives to make that work.

 

I'd love to read that article, mainly because I'd love to just use the same oil everywhere. Please link it. I've seen the posts on BITOG, which are all speculation, but I'd love to see something backed by facts.

I have a hard time believing that any R&D would go into developing a TC oil to improve fuel economy. I'd love to shake the hand of the engineer that got the funding for that work.

 

I’ll have to dig again but I can probably find it. Basically everything today is for fuel economy.

 

I put the Ravenol 75W in mine a few months back. The shipping cost more than the oil if I remember right. Maybe there are some other tacoma owners over there with you. Maybe have a case of the stuff shipped? I tried but could not buy the oil on Amazon or Walmart.

Theoretically. But yes that’s why they use it. Real world you won’t find a difference at the pump.
