New truck, ran rough, check engine light illuminated….

2023 TRD, 7719 miles on odometer. Ran rough, next morning check engine light illuminated. Called local dealer to schedule appointment. Next available time to check 3 weeks out. On the road 1400 miles from Montana home. Service writer suggested to drive to ascertain if truck runs OK. Drove 10 miles, no issues. Stopped, turned truck off and restarted. No check engine light. Runs OK. Now, WTF? NEW VEHICLES SUCK BIG TIME.

 

I’d stop by the nearest auto parts place and have someone put a scanner on it just to be sure what threw the code.

A quick thing you can check is to verify all the fuses are seated properly

 

Toyota says this is a normal characteristic… lol … na but seriously might be a sign of a bad fuel pump starting to go out .

 

I personally would file this in the "sometimes glitches happen" file and drive on. If it does it again, then you have a pattern to go by.

 

Checked fuses. OK.
Fuel pump issue? Hopefully not. With 7719 miles on a 2023 all should be good.
But, given how much technology is in these new Tacomas it’s mind boggling. Too much BS we do NOT need. All new trucks/cars are nanny vehicles.
BTW, I traded a 2017 Nissan Titan with the Cummins diesel for this Tacoma. Nothing but trouble for 50,000 miles. I Knick named it the Titanic. Spent months at the Nissan dealer waiting for parts. I was beyond angry. Had to negotiate with Nissan Corporate to settle. Thus my trepidation regarding new trucks. It was my hope that Toyota truck will be the answer. Stung once, damn me. Ummmm you said Montana. Are you using 85 octane widely available in Wy, Mt, and Co?

 

I had some intermittent issues with my '23 TRD OR with 3k miles, it turned out to be the fuel pump control module. I don't think that is a common issue, but they swapped it out and it's been good for about 700 miles, (knock on wood). That said, there was a TSB for the low pressure fuel pumps in the '16-'22 trucks, I assume it will be updated eventually to include the '23, because they didn't change anything regarding the part. As mentioned above, I would definitely get yourself a reader, or at least have a dealer read the stored codes, just so you have a record of them for the next time it happens. Good luck!

 

Older pre-OBD vehicles had intermittent problems too

The only difference was they wouldn't store trouble codes in history. You'd have to dig though each system looking for a needle in a haystack or wait for the problem to resurface. Nowadays you can scan it for codes and at least have some idea where the problem was coming from.

Electronics don't make diagnosis harder, they make it easier..

But, sorry to hear about an issue on such a new vehicle. Hope you can get something figured out..

3rd gens Tacomas are actually ancient besides TSS.

 

I 100% agree, sure it's annoying to have the CEL come on, but at least it can point you in a direction to troubleshoot. The problem becomes when dealer techs rely solely on the OBD codes to diagnose. I brought my wife's SantaFe in because of an intermittent wiper motor issue, and they said they couldn't troubleshoot it because "The OBD system wouldn't throw a code if the wipers are currently working". I laughed at them and said, "I don't think it throws a code even if the wiper motor isn't working, you're going to have to troubleshoot it the old fashioned way."

 

FWIW I barely see new vehicles with their hoods open on the side of the road. The ones I’ve seen are BMW and land rovers but we all know to stay away from them.

Most modern vehicles are more reliable than vehicles back in the day.

 

As someone who drove a 23 year old Silverado prior to buying my Tacoma, I agree.

 

I fixed a jeep wiper problem the other day that had a wiper code stored in the bcm. Not sure about Hyundai/Kia

Any intermittent problem will be harder for a tech to troubleshoot. If the wipers are working, what's he supposed to do? The motor is going to have power and ground, the switch will be working.. everything has to be working because the wipers are currently working. He can roll the dice and throw a motor at it. But if the problem comes back the customer will be pissed. Sometimes it's better to wait

 

If you can't get it to do it consistently then don't wast your time taking it into the dealer. if it is doing it intermittently chances are 100% it will not do it at the dealer.

 

So many different reasons why it could run rough. My first thought from your description was a bad tank of gas. I also highly suggest you run minimum of 87 octane, you will see more timing advance with premium fuel. The 2GR-FKS really likes 93 and up. This is not a guess, I log and monitor the knock sensors / timing advance. With 11.8:1 compression ratio it’s no wonder. If it does not come back would not worry about it.

 

What do you mean by running rough? My 2023 sr5 has a rough ass idle from day one 30 miles. At 3100 miles now still no check engine light
