Well after taking in all this information, and the multiple possible things that the problem could be, I’ve made an appointment for professional diagnosis tomorrow at 8 am. I’ve guessed my way through $1200 so far and it’s not fixed. At least I now know what I don’t have to replace lol.

Please keep us posted. Pretty curious what it ends up being. My bet is injectors or perhaps even an ECU issue

Ok so the garage said they saw the motor was running lean, and the upstream 02 sensor was shot. They replaced that, got good readings and took it for 2 separate drives and it didn’t buck or hesitate. I won’t be able to give her a good run until the morning, but I wanted to give an update and get your opinions on whether or not that sounds plausible as to the cause of my problems. Thanks again all.

Sounds plausible. Hadn't really considered the 02 sensors. Had you run it for codes? Because I would've thought you'd have gotten a lean condition code or 02 sensor-related code. I hope for your sake they're right and your truck is good to go

Yeah, I had been getting P0420 system catalyst below threshold bank 1 for a while. But I’m an idiot and assumed it was referring to the catalytic converter itself.

Then I think this shop probably figured it out. Bummer you replaced all that other stuff, but hey, sometimes that's how we learn.

Doesn't it seem like there should be a database available with confirmed fixes for symptoms? Maybe professional software provides all that. But it seems like this forum has documented fixes for every possible problem on these old trucks by now, and the only problem is it's hard to search the right keywords and wade through nonsense to get to it. I'm thinking similar to the sticky threads that list a whole bunch of stuff.

I mention it now because O2 sensors are a very common replacement that a large portion of 1st gen trucks have had done by now, and probably lots with the upstream O2 going out had these symptoms, and everyone who did it knows it but nobody speaks up because it's over and done with for them, and you don't know to search for O2 sensor symptoms. It would only be obvious if you had a list of symptoms for many parts. My downstream O2 failed first, so I replaced both.

yeah, you nailed it. It’s hard to describe exactly what the issues are sometimes. And the reason I didn’t really focus on that sensor is because when I bought it, it had a CEL for the bank 1 sensor 2 so I replaced it right away. That was just 20K ago. (I didn’t buy OEM so that’s what I get I guess) I don’t remember what the code was, it was 2 years ago now, but I seem to remember it pointed directly at that sensor. So i figured it would be more obvious if that was the problem. I just took it out for a 30 minute spin on the highway and it’s seems fine, so fingers crossed I can stop pumping money into her for a while. Thank you to everyone for your tips and input.
