I'm Planning a 2" lift on my 20' taco with Bilstien 5100s and 1.5" Icon AAL. But I want to know if the stock springs are a good idea to save some cash. Or do I need to replace those as well?

My preference is to use the proper spring to create the lift then the proper damper to control the spring.

This prevents needing a shock with various perches to create the lift.

But to your Q, a 20 should not need new springs for 5100s unless you have really high miles or something like rust gông on.

Reusing coils doesn't save any money or time cause you gotta assemble the struts

Bilstein 5100's are designed and they recommend you to use stock springs. It right on their website. Only reason to go aftermarket is if you are adding weight, such as steel bumper, winch, skids. If you do, order them pre-assembled, cuts the time and hassle of swapping over.

If, by the only account we have, the stock coil springs are 700 lb/in, I’m skeptical many people would need aftermarket coil springs with a higher spring rate. Plus, most of the aftermarket coil springs have a the sam lower spring rate (i.e. 600. 650, and 700).

Otherwise, I’m in agreement with your post.

I ran stock coils on 5100 shocks to level the front. After adding armor to my truck, I ended up pulling them off and replaced with nitrochargers with OME 886 coils.

If you're planning to add a steel bumper and winch at any point, upgrade the shocks and coils now.

Are you planning on any other mods? Any added weight to the front?

There would be two additional charges for removing the springs from old shocks. That will be about 1/4 the cost of a set of springs. A quality set of springs will be about $200. The shop I used a while back charged $35 to break down a spring assembly.

Don’t forget to get a new top strut mount and bushing assy. I’ve reused old ones in the past and have had clunks

Bilstein recommends you keep the oem springs. (The 5100s are even a nicer improvement over the oem Off Road shocks).

Unless your adding a "winch" & steel bumper, it is a total waste of money, and will actually make your ride worse.

Also, if your not planning to add weight to the rear, that 1.5" AAL "could" make your rear suspension harsher too.

I've got a rear steel bumper, but only used a 1" rear block to keep the Taco perfectly level. BUT, I'm not carrying anything in the box.
