Forgot this picture that was closer to the Osborne St. side.

Wooooooo! For the 2nd Gen crowd. I truly miss that OR. Absolutely loved the rims.

Correction. The exit is Osborne off the 210, and then it turns into Little Tujunga Canyon Road. I’ll be taking a cruise there tomorrow. I’ll report back if indeed it’s open and what is left to see after the Station Fire.

Negative. The gate was closed. I must have misunderstood as we are in Winter, so I’ll have to wait till Summer. Well…that led to a drive for some exploration. And some fucking sadness.

Picture heavy, and yeah, I was that bummed at what I saw :0(

So I decided to take the drive to go up to Chalao. The Station Fire done a nasty number. Strawberry Peak took a major hit. It lost most of its forest. That place was a gorgeous hike. I spent quite a bit of time in Angeles back in the 90’s when I lived in Tujunga. Once I was off work, I was in them mountains. Good times.

The North side took a hit. Places reminded me of The Black Forest in Germany. Amazing that beauty exists so close to the L.A. Basin.

I've done Drinkwater up that route probably 100 times, that entrance is probably the most "challenging" part of the trail besides a real long steep climb toward the end. Been a few years since the last one though. It's a fun, easy 4x4 trail but it does get challenging after the rain storms. No idea what it looks like since last years crazy storms. It eventually ends near Rower Flats on the Bouquet Canyon side. Makes for a fun day of wheeling between the two areas.

It’s when I got to Vetter Mountain that I just became so sad. The forest was ravaged to the fucking core. The real sad part is so many dead trees. So many. The worst for me being so many Cedar trees. I went down to the local office to get a permit as I want to go back and mill some. Shit. Little Tujunga office no longer is part of it. The jurisdiction changed hands to the Glendora office. And Steve mentioned that they want to build a mill at Crystal Lake. No wonder they are stacking the wood ready for the taking. I’ll be calling to see if they allow milling. So much Cedar. So much. The second photo, that small hill used to be covered in Pine. That feeling of beauty is gone in many ways.

And that’s when I heard a gang of saws. I mean a big gang. More on that later.

So then I drove around the loop and devastation. Fucking fire. I remember the cool trail that has a gate. But now it has an Edison sticker. I don’t recall that. Super nice trail. I’m glad I reasoned because I wasn’t packing a chainsaw again(!) and I was by meself.

The loop was just sadness. It’s all practically gone.Whats left of the road was fun. I went on to the fire lookout. That road was fun also.

It was nice to see this small trail open. Always a quickie fave back then. I can’t recall if I ever took A. Well, there were a few sketchy spots where I yelled, “But you wanted to, huh?!!!” Front end falling into an abyss. Stockers are hard to trail!!!! But fun mang.

I finally got to Chalao, and that’s when it hit me. They worked damn hard to save that area. And did for the most part. But sad man. Back 15 or so years ago, I drove through Chalao Station to get to an trail and it was bustling with ANF workers and their children. Even had its own school. Now it’s a ghost town. Not one person. I didn’t take pictures of the station, but some sad shit to see it and history falling apart. I can’t recall the trail in the rear that exits to the 2.

L.A.’s own ski lift, LOL. It was cool back in the day. I believe it still in service(?). They have it closed off in the usual place. Just too much snow. I was hoping to get to Big Horn sheep country to listen for rocks  Always a spotting thereafter.

So on the way back down is when I encountered the crew from Oregon. Big gang. 30 fallers spread about 300-400 acres. I spoke with the boss and mentioned I heard a gang of saws. But I told him I didn’t realize they were so many. In fact, 30- Stihl 500’s. Just in that area. They are east of there as well. Around Drinkwater(?) Boquet Canyon, not sure. He then tells me they are having issues with the 500’s. I ask, “how many hours are you getting?” “3 months.” (Holy fuck!, that’s a lot of hard core cutting)

And that’s when I heard it. Crack, crack, CRACK…BOOM. I turned to see a mega Cedar being felled. I was in heaven. I hope I get to mill some of that wood Glendora Office!!!!!!!! Might be hard though, it’s a monument now. Good Stuff, The End.

Niiiiiiiice. Thank you for the intel. But with a stocker, I’m afraid of the Darlington Stripes! Best pick my battles oh so carefully. I hope I do get to do it someday. Yeah, seems like the rains have caused craziness everywhere.

Correction, assumed it was the 3rd gen you were referring to. That is either a 2006/2007 PreRunner.

I went back this morning to try and convince him to switch to Huskies :D

I see what the issue is for the 500i. Air filtration is the weak point. To have to switch out a top end every 3 months is lame. They need to re-design the air filtration. Dust and chips will eventually score a piston ring and will “dilute” the compression/power.

Looking to go back and try this one after reading about the Tundra trick of pinning the thermostat on the transmission. The torque converter got too hot on the MK10 climb. For now at least. planning on adding an electric fan up front soon.

Yeah it was really easy before the rain now it’s all washed out it’s fun to do it I wouldn’t try it in a stock truck unless they want to leave their steps or trailer conector there
