1GRFE Harmonic Balancer installation

Hey Guys
How do you tighten the Harmonic Balancer to get it to 184 Lbs. of Torque? I used the technique of using a long arm ratchet against frame and turning over engine to loosen it.

Is your truck a manual or Auto.
If it’s a manual, put it in 4th/5th gear and crank it down.

If it’s an Auto, you need to make a tool.
Or buy one. The pulley has some threaded holes I believe?
It at least I believe there are holes in it?

 

Gotcha, makes total sense, with all the dirt on the balancer I didn't even see the holes until now. Just chased the threads now. Will need to finish cleaning it up.

 

Stick a screwdriver on the flex plate teeth, crank to your hearts desire.

 

there is typically a special tool used to counterhold the pulley while torquing the crank bolt
which can be a one time use stretch bolt with a final degree turn

 

I’m trying to replace my harmonic balancer. I received a new one from Dayco and there are two grooves, one in red arrow and one in blue arrow that confusing me. My thought was that all I needed to do was just lineup that red groove with the crankshaft and I’m good to go, but when I checked the metal rod that was sticking out from the engine crankshaft, nothing was protruding to match that red groove for a lineup. So how do I install this? And what is the blue arrow for? (2007 Tacoma V6)

 

Are trying to install it or remove it?

You can remove it by using a long breaker wedged under the frame and quickly crank over the engine.

To install you can get something like

this. That what I used to install mine.

The pulley can only go on one way.

 

should be a key way on the crankshaft. I believe the blue is once rotated to align with a spot on the block it’s at TDC

 

You can rent tool to remove and install very easy something like this

What specifically do you need help with?

Slide the pulley onto crankshaft as far as it can go. Install the pulley holder and tighten the crankshaft bolt to the specified torque. Remove the tool, you are done.

Assuming you have the correct pulley, you just need to install it, there is nothing to do with timing.

blue is a timing mark

installation is reverse of removal

So where do I need to line up the blue arrow groove?

 

you don't line it up anywhere unless you are trying to replace the timing chain or camshaft/gears

 

So I guess, just slide in the crankshaft pulley, put in the bolt, and tighten it up then torque it.

 

I wouldn’t use the bolt to pull it in, that’s a good way to stretch the threads

 

The pulley is not pressed on. The pulley should just slide onto the crankshaft. The bolt holds it down.
