The off road is nice. But for me I don't go off road as much as when I had my lifted Liberty CRD and then I was just on trails rated "green" or forestry trails. I never needed a locker but its nice to have I suppose.
You could get a TRD off road and be happy or spend a little less and get an SR5 4x4 like mine. Then add some skids and stuff and probably still be happy. The only difference is the sr5 has no locker in the rear, no computer controlled off road stuff, and different wheels, tires and different shocks.
A lot of people change the tires and wheels and also do lifts on either.
All depends on what you want and where you want to start mods from.

Let us know if you are looking at a new 2023 or 2024. If you want a new 2023 you should hurry.

What he said - SR5 ... everything you need nothing you don't.
You can always add better shocks and tires.
Plus, my SR5 isn't push-button-start, one of the main reasons I went SR5.

I agree with you on Sr5. My 2020 is key start but I think they started doing push button start in the 23 SR5. I know they made the automated climate control standard on them in 21 or 22 also and mine has the manual version. I do like the key better myself.

The off road rides the best, gives more options, and will have better resale. Every time I see a sport I think why?

If u can find a 23 off-road 4x4 I would go with that . Better to have options when u need it …than needing it and not having it off-roading . I would stay away from the 4th gen to expensive and issues will arise with the new model .

As others have said, go with the 2023. Heck buy 2 of 'em and sit one in the garage a few years then sell
it for twice the price LOL.

How much do you plan to mod? How much of a concern is budget?

I ask those two because if you plan to mod, it's hands down a better plan to get a less expensive trim and mod it up to your standards and preferences. If you are past the modding stage, have the budget, and just want to buy it and go, the TRD Pro is a good blend of the "luxury" (in quotes because it's still a Toyota, not a Lexus) and the off road capabilities.

For off road features, just know that the locker and terrain modes are only usable in 4Lo on the 3rd gens.

Welcome to TW. Can't help you much on your decision. I have a Limited. Don't do any off roading.

Having my Tacoma for about 6 months, I can say that I love my truck but wish I would have held out for a little bit better of a deal. I got a 2WD SR that was a lease turn-in and I have no qualms with it, but I think I would have gone with a 4x4 if given the chance again, but I like the SR since I don’t care for a lot of extra features. I think an SR5 would be a fine choice to build your perfect ride, but if you want performance out of the box with no mods needed, TRD Off Road is the way to go. You can get a solid suspension setup for a lot less than the price difference between an OR and SR5, and the locker is really only necessary if you’re hardcore wheeling.

I like how no one has mentioned the lay out of the truck DCSB, DCLB, ACLB. I would start here then look at trim packages. I require a DCLB and out here you can't get an offroad in that do a sport is the next bet bet. You can always change suspension or add a locker you cant add doors or extend a bed.

DCLB off-road is more difficult to find but not impossible. There are 77 DCLB offroads for sale within 500 miles of my residence.

The fact that you're in Canada probably should have been clarified beyond "out here" in the first post.

Your present location is irrelevant. Where you were shopping for the truck is what matters in this context.

    somebody wiser than me said:

2 wd will take you a lot of places
4x4 will get you out of the places that were too much for 2wd (i.e. get outa jail free card)

If it's a MT AC, Sport was the only game in town for US buyers. Other than that, agreed.
