Recent recall, rear axle, both sides.
Check the highlighted nuts. 27 lbs ft

Thanks much. Easy to do a check. I wonder why Toyota thinks they won't be able to start the recall process until April.

 

120,000 miles ... if mine are lose it's from a few too many wheels in the air events at Silver Lake and not Toyota. I'll check when I do service this weekend, though.

 

I thought this recall was only for 2022 and 2023 Tacomas, how on earth have you already put 120,000 miles on the clock on such a young truck?

What I don't understand is how "welding debris" could affect those nuts. Does the backing plate have the welding debris on it that wouldn't let the nuts seat correctly, or... ? I'll be checking the torque on those nuts tonight while the weather is over 40 degrees and we have a little sunshine.

so the idea behind us on the tundra, was welding debris didn’t allow the axle retaining flange to sit completely flat. This allowed the plate to vibrate or flex, and nuts to loosen

Just got my free oil change done this morning and asked about the recall. I havent received a notification on the toyota site, and the tech told me basically that theyve got the bulletin but not much info about the issue yet.

I will say that Ive churped my rear tires twice today (while turning/accel), driving within the parameters of how I always drive.
Get the feeling something was tightened down that wasnt before. I havent had much time or done too much with this truck yet, havent even taken the the wheels off or checked the torque on the lug nuts.

 

Is the the recall for the 2022s and 2023s?

 

Toyota is pretty good about taking care of things that slip through their system

 

As part of the recall, Toyota will have an estimate for how many axles they'll need to fix or potentially replace. They need to have that number of parts in inventory before they can start the formal process. They'll need some time to produce enough replacement parts and get them into US warehouses before starting the recall.

That's my assumption, anyway.

 

Understood. So if that is the case, then re-torquing them down may not resolve the issue, just delay it. Sounds like the axle retaining plate is what Toyota will be stocking and replacing if there is welding debris in the way of the two parts being able to sit flush.
