$60K for an Off Road!?!

In 1996 the Tacoma was more expensive than the ranger or s-10. In 2005 the Tacoma was
more expensive than the ranger, colorado, and frontier. In 2017, the Tacoma was more expensive than the colorado and frontier.

the Tacoma has never been the “budget” choice.

 

I just tried to build the most basic SR 4-door (have a family) short bed 4x4 (I live in NH) w/o any packages add-ons etc..- $38,395

Chevy Colorado - basic 4-door & 4wd WT - $33,995
Ford Danger Ranger - $35,425

Here in NH on the Seacoast, we had Ram 1500 going for just over $40,995 that would out perform my Tacoma.

 

That WT doesn’t even have a low range transfer case

 

It almost makes more sense to just buy a trd model for couple grand more. 4wd standard on off road and you get way more features. Can't imagine them selling many sr or sr5s, doesn't make much sense.

EDIT: Unless maybe you get access cab and 2wd.

 

Except for once you start adding a couple features found in most modern vehicles you’re suddenly at $54K.

 

How do you guys come up with these thoughts? What is a "couple grand?"

Cheapest TRD sport you can build is $44k

 

One asked about the lower end tirms, where this came from. But, you're are right, and now were at 45k+ for a mid-size, which as a consumer I will not pay. I will spend 50k and get A LOT more capable truck.

 

When the comparison is a truck without low range, cruise control, or carpet, it’s kinda hard to consider them “comparable”

Of relevance, a year ago Jack Hollis bragged that the average new car transaction price would soon clear $50k. He didn’t dream it or consult a magic eight-ball: their own highly-paid finance team forecast it, and mercifully, were 100% wrong. Those crap forecasts offer guidance on pricing, so why waste money now on Toyota’s shoddy analytics.

I get as excited as anyone else here over new Tacomas and kept all the receipts as proof, but if you want a Gen4 and also value your money, wait at least until EOY.

 

I see the base 4x4 Ranger at $37.9 and the base 4x4 Colorado at $34.4

I guess you could dig deeper into the differences in the build and features of each truck and decide what to buy. Is the 11% difference in the Colorado worth it to you? Will that difference vanish the moment you drive the truck off the lot for resale value? Is the Tacoma 11% more "reliable" over the life of the truck? If you want/need a full size truck why even include any of these 3 in comparison?

 

Right I'm talking about both trucks with no features.

 

Go build a tacoma in sr or sr5, trd grade with double cab 4wd and no options. It's like a couple grand difference. So of it's 40k for an sr5 why not spend 42k for the off road? Crawl control, multi terrain select, locking differential etc.

Edit: it used to be a much wider margin in older generation tacomas, not anymore.

 

Whats the source on your data? Just curious as I see different info. But I do agree that 4g will be discounted by EOY or sooner depending on what happens with interest rates.

I did the comparison of the lowest end of each truck, which was asked, pretty simple. I am not in the market for either, both are VERY over priced for what you get in my opinion. You can justify spending your money on a mid-sized, I am in for the discussion.

 

I think realistically it will be a wider margin at the dealership. Toyota isnt accepting custom orders, so any TRD OR they build will likely not be a bare bones model.

 

Why would you want that? Every little shitbox comes with a ton of features. Why does it suddenly cost twice as much to add those features to a midsize truck?

 

Sure, they try to put on as many options as possible because it's more profit.

Was just trying to make a point. Basically the sr and sr5s aren't value options anymore like they used to be.

 

Also, someone posted a video of a manager sales rep somewhere, might be the tacoma4g website, but either way he said the majority of the price went up because of safety and powertrain. Well what about all the other offerings? Almost all of them have turbo powertrain and I'm sure similar safety features.

The numbers I posted were base 4x4s. All the points I made are things that can be used for justification of price. It's all just opinions anyway.

 

You can’t really meaningfully compare the “bottom trim” when the equipment disparities are so great that the only thing they share are that they’re the lowest grade. The WT lacks cruise control, carpet, or even a two speed transfer case.
