For anyone still running Otay truck trail, Marron valley, donaho spur areas. Not fear mongering, just go prepared. Doubt anyone will ever be robbed while off-roading but don't let yourself become a victim.

USBP surveillance technology near Chula Vista, CA captured these images of armed bandits robbing several groups as they attempted to enter the country illegally

It's been going on in this area for 40+ years honestly even longer than that. In the 70's SDPD southern div. had a unit to try and slow it down, in the 80's USBP and SDPD formed another unit to do the same when alien entries were at an all-time high, same thing is happening today. Stay vigilant, trust your gut and you'll be alright.

I have been there (last in 2017), took photos, never stayed. The road is paved from Hwy. 1 past the ranch and ends at the observatories at 9,280 ft.

See that trip report & photos, posted here on TW: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...tín-and-9-000-sierra-san-pedro-mártir.515492/

Read my Baja Bound articles that mention or detail the Meling Ranch (Rancho Meling):

    and
    https://www.bajabound.com/bajaadventures/bajatravel/san_pedro_martir

    Thanks for asking!

Thank you so much for responding and the information. The road all the way in to the Meling Ranch is paved now?
My 30 year old son was conceived there! Generators used to be shut down at 8:30pm. Hey, it's amazing what one can achieve in the dark!
The Meling Ranch is/was an amazing place to visit. I'd consider another trip. Particularly if the road is now paved.

I’ve read, and probably still have around here, the book about that unit - Lines and Shadows. Good reading.

There's a scene in "Lines and Shadows" about dressing up a Sheriff to pose as an illegal alien, there was an issue with Taxi drivers on the San Diego side picking up crossers and transporting them.
My brother was that Sheriff, true occurrence. (Now deceased) Renee Camacho is mentioned in the book, he's a cousin. Also retired law enforcement. In retirement he facilitated
with the Tijuana Police for Americans getting into trouble south of the border. Last time I talked to him (MANY years ago), one of my buddies had someone from their camping party pass away down south
and they were trying to figure out how to get his body back across the border without the usual hassle. They ended up propping his body up in the backseat and pretended he
was asleep to get through Customs. True as Rain....

Nay, not a fan of paranormal activity. But, I was a Border Patrol agent (94-96 class 269) assigned to Chula Vista station. I ended up working all the canyons mentioned in Lines and Shadows - I read the book on the flight to the academy in Georgia. Half my class went to Brownfield station, which covered Otay Mtn. I worked between Otay and San Ysidro POE’s. I envied the Brownfield guys cause they off-roaded a lot more than we did. But I did manage to break a Dick Cepek trailing arm in my Bronco one day while off-roading in the Washer Woman area.

    Not enough...
Anyone in Chula/Bonita area can help a brother out tonight? I will be eternally thankful. I have to be in Oceanside around 9-10pm, but my front brakes are grinding like a motherfucker. I've had brand new disks and rotors sitting in my truck for a week now, just did not have ability to swap them. My life is a mess right now - haven't been able to find a job. 25 years in IT, applied for no less than 200 jobs in 2 months. Had 2 shitty interviews! My lower back is shot I can barely sit down and stand up. And to kick me while I'm down, life threw the worst it could have at me.... my dog died on Tuesday suddenly. From totally normal to dead in 15 minutes. He was only 10. As healthy as they get. I've been bawling my eyes out for 4 days now. That dog was *everything* to me. Paid $275 to the vet for cremation so now I have $50 left in the bank, so I can't really pay much. I can get a pizza and a 6 pack though. Have all the tools, except the jackstands. Not supposed to do any work in the driveway, but whatever. I'm off 54 and Woodman in Bay Terraces.

Sorry for the short notice on a Friday night. Gents, help a brother out. Please.

If you can make it to Lakeside, I can help you out with the brake job. You don't need to bring any tools. Wife is setting dinner soon, so would only take your six pack. Sorry to hear about your dog.
