    Hey Gang,
I bought my Taco new and I've used the same LG Q6 phone since. Just recently the text function has changed. Now I can't send or receive texts. I get an interrupting 'beep' through the sound system when a text comes in but that's all. For 3 years I'd have the text read to me and then I could dictate a send text back. Now in Settings it's all 'greyed' out.
Any idea what's changed? Or how to get the nice lady to like me again?
    The phone functions normally.
    Thanks, Gup.

The nice lady hates me too. I don't even get a "beep" when a text comes in. I miss them all the time so I have to keep the blue tooth off on my phone so I can hear when a text comes in. Most are work related so I need to get back to them when possible.

Have you tried having the Headunit forget the phone and then re-pair the phone?

I'm usually keeping my eyes on the road when behind the wheel.

That’s the whole point of having the truck read the text and then dictate a reply back to the phone via Bluetooth. Exactly what the OP was doing before the truck decided not to cooperate anymore.

I'm not the OP.. But thank you. That did the trick for me. I wasn't thinking and should have done that months ago.

Oh I get it - the thing reads the text and 'talks' to you via the truck speakers - you can talk back to it and it sends?
Apologies for not getting it I'm an old geezer - not sure that the 'thing' would convert my 'French' ... I'm sure those words are in the dictionary.

There are several pre set responses you can tap and it will text back. On my way, running late. Ect. I can't remember all of them.

And if you can do speech to text. I don't know how to do that. But would be cool. But I'm older and not too tech savvy.

So, I took Taco2016's advice and deleted my phone from the head unit and then re-paired it. Presto! I'm back in business texting on the fly. But, I'm now restricted to the ten 'canned response answers', I'm on my way, Driving now, In traffic, I'll be there soon, etc. Originally, for the first 3 years, I was able to dictate my texts, the lady would read them back for verification, and then send them. Also, when the texts came in she would read them to me while they flashed on the screen while I was driving any speed. What happened to that convenience? It was almost my favourite feature on the new truck. Now I'm restricted to the Toyota answers. Do you think Toyota changed this software feature without notifying us? My service guy knows way less than me about all this.

Might also be your LG phone updating to a newer Android version causing the changes. I would look in your phone Bluetooth Permission settings to see if you can get back to the usability you want.

Just making sure you know you can edit each Toyota answer by clicking the Pencil icon to the right of each sentence. Also you should have 15 pre-written responses available (see the middle of this video).

Thanks. That video is 9 years old, though. My '21 Sport has the updated head unit and doesn't have the pencil icon to edit the messages and there are only 10. I realize my phone is older but it is the only one I've used in this truck and it used to utilize all the truck's text features just fine. The changes are only about 6 months old, or so.

Apologies for the old video, but my 8 year old Sport text screen looks identical to the video (15 pre-written sentences all with a pencil icon for me to edit). I have never updated my head unit software. Hopefully someone with a newer Entune can chime in.

    My 2016 is similar.
When I use the talk button on the steering wheel it never understands what I said and for replies I get the canned messages and no way to edit them. However, if I go through the phone (hey Siri, I'm an Apple user) it will I can dictate a message and plays through the truck's speakers.
    Phone to Truck :)
    Truck to Phone
It helps that I have a dash phone mount.

Maybe there's a car play setting on your phone that can be changed? I vaguely remember having to enable "Show Text" in the phones Bluetooth settings for the Tacoma.
I do get a head unit notification for an incoming text. It will not display the text, but I can have it read to me.

Are you able to read text on the head unit when your truck is stopped?

Same for me, can only read the text when stopped. It’s a Toyota safety feature.
