Since when is doing any of that bad for a truck? It’s an effing 4WD truck not a Corolla. That’s what they are meant to do.

I agree, that truck has not even gotten close to being “beat on”
Blows my mind that people think the off-roading the these guys do is hard on the vehicles. But maybe these guys are right now :annoyed:

    This is embarrassing

Yike…maybes it’s just one of those mon/fri trucks.

    what could it be?

I feel like a diff or xfer case or axel would have a lot more banging and grinding going on

You’d be suprised, I once grenaded a birff and drove it from buck island to rubicon springs, never made any noise, we all thought it was a clean brake on the shaft so I just locked the front and drove it. Now that was a hard day on the truck. Not this low traction shit.

My first thought was a clean break on the an axle or maybe an output shaft. I hope it’s the actuator for 4wd not seating properly and not some really poor quality metal.

That’s just for the turbo. The 4WD system is Barbie jeep grade. :D

This will look really bad 100% for whatever reason caused it. In the video, they were not doing anything beyond what a Tacoma is capable of, not even close. I believe Toyota will look into this issue and give a good answer to public. The worst thing is that they used a Colorado towing it out at the end of the video.

Man that was some mild off roading and mild slippage to break an axle? Seems weak..

This is the first time that both front axle are different lengths and have different part numbers. All previous gens the front axles were interchangable. Not sure if this that something to do with the premature failure.

    Lol, these comments.

My 2014 F150 actuator was shot and my truck was stuck in 4High. I ran that truck for 20k miles in 4 high, over a year, going up to 90mph on the freeway throughout that time. Eventually, I got the actuators fixed and replaced and guess what? The truck is still running fine. I've never heard of this 4-high crap until I bought my Tacoma and saw a few comments like yours. You can use 4 high at any speed, you just won't get good MPG.

The tires suck in the snow, okay? Has nothing to do with breaking a CV Axle. This Tacoma shouldn't have broken this easily, and anyone saying otherwise are in denial. New cars are junk. They're only made to last the warranty period, and even then shit goes wrong before then as shown in the video.

Maybe I didn’t look enough, but I saw nothing in the owners manual about a speed limit on 4WD usage.

Something breaking at this low of mileage seeing how they’ve driven it is a sad testament to how whatever component broke was designed.

Ya I thought the only thing about max speed was for engaging 4hi, which is around 62 if I remember correctly (at least for the 3g)

No you didn't lol. I call BS.

Traditional 4wd systems are not made to be in 4wd on dry pavement for long periods of time.

This is right out of the owner's manual for a 2014 F150:

Note: Do not use 4X4 mode on dry, hard surfaced roads. Doing so will produce excessive noise, increase tire wear and may damage drive components. 4X4 mode is only intended for consistently slippery or loose surfaces

I'm guessing most people on here don't actually 4wd their vehicles. The type of off-roading TFL did was close to nothing. A Subaru can do that. Also 4H drag race had nothing to do with it.

My guess it's a defect of some sort or worse case design flaw.

I’m making fun of the comments. Truck shouldn’t have had any problems doing what it was then, or in their videos before.

My guess is just an early defect that’s 100% not indicative of what we should expect from future Gen4’s. But it is entertaining to watch TFL squirm between attempting to give an honest assessment to their viewers while not displeasing Toyota corporate publicly.

Careful TFL, you don’t want to be left out of LC test drives and 4R reveals.

My 1st gen would have had no issue making it up that. My WRX wouldn’t have snapped anything if it had the clearance to get over that.

I’m curious what exactly broke. Seeing a Colorado have to Rescue a brand new Tacoma on a simple trail is fantastic free marketing for Chevy.

    Yep.

Being honest, if that happened to me in my brand-new $50k truck in the middle of nowhere over a relatively mild obstacle, my son would be wearing sound-proof ear muffs, and they’d probably have to bleep every other word.
