Why would you EVER want to spend the time and effort to transplant a 1GR-FE in any vehicle? I have a 1GR-FE, 5sp auto trans and a manual T-case in my shop right now. The only one of those parts worth the time and effort to put in a 3rd gen mod would be putting a the manual T-Case on a 3rd gen. The way the 1GR-FE's are designed if you run them at high RPM's for any length of time they self destruct. I went through a few of them.

The 2nd gen T-case and trans can easily be fitted to a 3rd gen 3.5, I don't see why it would be difficult to swap in a 1GR-FE into a 3rd gen and use the existing drivetrain. I just don't see why anyone would want to do it?

Do you think 1gr will shine with 3rd gen 2 OD gears?

Physically putting it in would be fairly straightforward. Systems integration, however, would be rather unpleasant and not at all worth the effort

Lmao some people are just designed to break everything. Sounds like you’re one of them. Japanese motors love high RPM. Maybe they just don’t love you.

This swap makes no sense but I'm sub'd for the build thread regardless.

Can't believe I hadn't thought of this... I saw these frontend-swapped 2nd gens on TikTok or something in like 2020 and thought they looked cool. Seen pictures several times and always love the look but you're right -- the 2nd gen interior is what kept me from going with a 2015 TRD Sport with manual transmission. My truck is optioned for minimal electronics which I love, but the aesthetics of the 2nd generation interior are a little brutal to look at every day if it's not a work rig.

They are, but yeah the 2nd Gen interior…the dash always looked like it was made from recycled soda bottles to me.

Maybe, but it would take some serious reprogramming. 3rd Gen like to run around 2600 RPM's, that would kill a 1GR-FE. You would need to adjust shifting and at lower RPM's would put your speed lower. So by the time you hit 6th gear you would have to do some math to figure out what speed you could reach without the 1GR-FE reaching a steady cruising speed without settling at over 2300 RPM's.

Run a 1GR-FE at 2700 RPM's for a few hundred miles straight. Just let me know ahead of time so I can make arrangements to pick you up once it over heats for one of MANY reasons due to the horrible engineer of those engines

I mean, what engineer would design an engine with the last cylinders to be cooled and at the end of the oil circulation crammed against the firewall making cylinders 5 and 6 run hotter than the rest on an aluminum block, THEN ship them with defective head gaskets???

And yes I pushed them to the limits, run them off-road and 100MPH+ for hundreds of miles at a time on the interstate.

The 3-VIN, 5-VIN and J-VIN. J-VIN's are the best, but tend to always develop oil leaks on the right side of the timing cover.

My body wants a 2jz my mind wants an LS. LS wins for the ease of finding cheap parts in the middle of no where.

That’s why I thought a 1GR-FE would be better for me. I very seldom go higher than 3 grand in my Tacoma just because I’m a slow driver. Honestly though, Yesterday I pulled out in front of another driver a little too close, and got that Tacoma up to about 6 or 7 grand, all I’m going to say is that I was impressed with what it’s current engine will do at high engine speed.

It will get up and boogie, certainly surprised me the first time I laid into it. Went to whip out an around a tractor…stuck my foot to the floor next thing I know, doing 80 in a 45.

Almost like hitting the power band on a certain 2-Stroke dirt bikes, nothing, nothing….then it wants to rip your arms out of their sockets.

Had to adjust my driving style a bit, but used to it know. Previous vehicles had trouble getting out of their own way even when floored.
