If it were my truck, at that price, I'd get it fixed even if insurance wasn't paying for most of it. In my case my insurance would cover all but $500. If you said anything about insurance above I missed it.

My truck is a little different. My 07 with 244,000 miles has been used hard and has a lot of minor dings, scratches and peeling paint. If that happened to my truck at this point I'd keep driving it. I may well get mine whole truck repainted and all of the minor character marks repaired at the same time. But that's a few years down the road. I did get an estimate to make it like new for $4000.

If were me I'd get the skin and put all the other parts taken off back on and if the other doesn't have decals then take off the decals on the other side. If you can get 1 already painted bonus. The old rule of thumb is if you're parts cost $10.00 then labor should cost $10.00. I could be out of touch with reality.

2K is money well spent to make it like you got it from your father and preserve domestic tranquility.

Yeah the 6h bugs me. Any way to get them to paint a bedside for you and you self install? Not that hard to apply a sticker if you take your time. Could unbolt the old one to learn and give to them to match color?

I’d pay 1k myself but 2k would make me pause because that’s getting close to half a flatbed.

That cost is about what I paid 4 years ago to have a shopping cart dent fixed on my Suburban....and its a 1997 model. Truck is in mint condition, so it was easy to justify, albeit a little pricey. I enjoy using it, looking at it and receiving compliments when out and about.

    $2 grand.. heh... nope.

Scruff/wire-wheel out the bad paint, mask it, prime it, & use a small autobody-style air brush to repaint. Call it good.

If you're super-intent, apply body filler first, sand, etc, then prime & paint.

    ----

Respect for personal preferences and family dynamics aside, in my view the image of "Toyota Tacoma" is not about show-car perfection. It's about drivetrain reliability, getting from point A to point B, getting work done, having a good time now and then.
