    Hey all

I’ve looked at a bunch of threads and have checked off a couple steps with a couple more to go. Next is diving in to the truck a lot further.

Wanted to ask about my specific situation.

while the engine is off the transmission shifts smoothly between gears.

when the engine is running cold, the transmission will not shift into first. With a large amount of force it may shift into second, but sometimes not at all (no other gears either)

when running hot, or off, the transmission is butter for all gears.

have you run into this with a 96 sr5? What was the cause/fix?

So far I have changed the transmission, transfer case, and rear diff with redline gear oil. I don’t think the clutch pedal comes into play due to the smooth hot shifts. Overall, after the oil change, it has become smoother during hot operations, but the cold problems have persisted.

thanks for any responses, even if you didn’t have the same issue, any ideas are welcome.

    #1stgensuperiority as always.

I don't have a solution but I have the same problem, mine goes into 2nd fine but 1st is always kind of a pain. I hope someone on here has a solution or diagnostic.

I had a very similar issue, but it COULD shift into first if I used way too much force on the shifter, but it was ridiculous.
It got worse and worse until the pushrod (31404-28020) snapped in half during a road trip, I had to get it welded at some mechanic.

I reckon the clutch master cylinder wasn't being fully depressed, so it didn't function as intended. As soon as my engine warmed up however, it became easier because I was pretty much using half clutch presses unknowingly.
EDIT: You might just need to change the position of those screw threads and nut to spec, that helps a ton if your part isn't falling apart like mine was.

For a follow up: All I had to do was hook my toe under the clutch pedal and pull it back toward me. Occasionally I'll have to do it again, but shifts smooth as butter. I'm sure it'll force my hand to take care of it eventually

Sounds like a failing master or slave cylinder.
