Broken crankshaft key leads to tear down and timing service

If you are not replacing the sprocket and already replaced the key, do not try to remove it. Why potentially create another problem.

Do you have any other pics of the camshafts head on as opposed to from the top? From your pics it looks off ever so slightly.

 

All sprockets are new and already replaced including the crank sprocket.

 

You are splitting hairs, half of a chain link off maybe a problem but a 1/16” of an inch may just be a bit of slop that’s built in.

 

Here are two more that kinda show what my eye sees when I’m looking at it. Yeah at this point I’m wondering how much off is okay?

Think about it in terms of gears
Has it moved enough to be a tooth off? No? Then send it

 

No I’d say MAYBE a quarter tooth

 

Hard to tell if it is off from the pics. I bet if you wanted to put a crescent wrench on either of the banks cams it would move the gears ever so slightly to ease your ocd.

 

I’ve tried that it just pulls the other bank and makes it off when I do that. Since the main chain is on by then

 

I guess the question is how much off is acceptable and will it really affect anything. My old chains were stretched and off more than this and I never got a code or misfires or anything soo…

 

If you are off by a tooth then it’s a problem. If you have new timing components then there shouldn’t be a problem since there is nothing that can be worn out. Send it.

Installing the timing cover is the hardest part remaining in my opinion. So get ready to test your patience.

 

Yeah I feel like once I get this timing done and the cover it’s all pretty straight forward from there

 

Any other opinions on my dilemma here? Does it being barely off affect timing? Am I being too anal

 

It's probably fine. You have to jump a complete tooth left or right to change anything anyway

Spin it over a few times and recheck your marks

 

Yeah, it would have to be a lot further off than what your pics show -- I thought you were just showing us how well you aligned the marks.

When running, the tensioners will take up some slack. The valve springs will try to push it off a bit. Maybe post a pic from the front?

Yeah I guess I’m not really worried about anything being worn, more so whether or not the cam is aligned correctly. I feel like the engine moves so fast that much off probably wouldn’t affect it too much.

Like others have mentioned, that's not enough to worry about. If everything else is lined up where the proper tooth is closer to the reference mark than any other teeth, you should be just fine.
