That's the cheap part. I never really understood spindle gussets.

Spindles are supposed to bend 1st. If your spindle gussets won't let your spindles bend, something way more expensive is gonna bend...your frame.

    Keep us posted.

Spindle gussets aren't to keep the spindle from bending. Their meant to keep the eye of the spindle from breaking. Like this: lol

Picked up a hf fixture table. Not the fanciest in the world but should be plenty for my needs.

All that matters is that you like it and it works for you!

Such a shame that a new table only looks that good until you use it

No but really a table like that is perfect for someone that mainly TIG welds.

You don't need a thick base plate cause you don't need to clamp shit down like a gorilla, it's perfect.

Plus you can use those $3 clamps to add more to your table by welding some 3/8" rod to the ends.

Yeah I'll only be tig welding on it. Clamping stuff down at the edge of the table is definitely a limiting factor so this should help alot. I do also plan on modifying the clamps. Doesn't make a ton of sense to have them bolt down.

My guess for doing so is to prevent the table from warping?

Traditional clamps as you know (sharing for those that don't know) are good only for thick tables as they can resist the tension caused from the clamping force (3/8" shown)

    20240301_141555.jpg

I don't use them on my smaller fixture (3/16" shown) as those and thinner would suffer from deformation. Not to mention less of a "wall" for the clamp insert to work with

    20240301_141643.jpg

You could benefit from these even

    https://fireballtool.com/products/insert-hook-clamp?_pos=5&_sid=e37d1ae63&_ss=r

But really just using your own (modified) as well as a DIY set of those $3 from HF would be best...unless time and money like you said earlier :luvya:

Works decent so far! The clamps aren't the best but that's expected. Got the job done though.

Hey guys, really dumb question here but the headers/bung that Ive been working on...
headers are aluminum, right? They are the TRD 3.4 headers. Gonna take it to a local welder tomorrow and he asked if it was aluminum or steel. Am I right in saying that aluminum is a softer non magnetic metal? I'm putting a magnet to the grinded off bung area and it's slightly pulling but the rest of the pipe doesn't except for the flanges.
Don't know if a picture helps..

Did the grinding make sparks? If yes, it's an iron alloy. You most likely have stainless steel if there were sparks.

You can weld plain iron to stainless no problem.

Magnet sticks slightly to stainless. Yes aluminum is nonmagnetic

    Stainless steel.

They wouldn't use aluminum for headers.

Flanges are mild steel cause it's cheap to produce.

And yes, you can easily weld steel to stainless steel but no steel can weld to aluminum.

Your welder was asking because some bungs are aluminum.

Yes it was making sparks but I think that's because I was grinding off the old bung and weld. I'm hoping there won't be a problem with welding this new bung on the pipe. I'm sure he'll be able to know for sure when he sees it.

Thank you. That's a relief to hear. So there shouldn't be a problem welding it on.
