What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

What's the general consensus on ignition coils...specifically NGK vs Denso?

I've found both online, here:

I've heard about getting other parts off Amazon and they being "copycats" and not true OEM parts, so that's one worry.

I haven't checked yet, but I can only assume that true dealer parts from a dealership would cost....2x? If that's not true, then I would just go there and get them...and I can do that anyway if there's worry of copycats, like I said, regardless of price...buy once-cry once, ya know. But at the same time, I don't want to pay more (if it even is more) for the exact same legit parts.



At any rate, IF these are legit OEM parts, any thoughts on NGK vs Denso? Is one as good as the other?

Did the factory use them similar to how they did the spark plugs themselves (3 of each)?

I just picked up six new ignition coils off of Amazon. Denso, shipped direct from the ‘Denso Online Store’. They are absolutely true Denso parts.
Amazon - $41.95 per coil
Local Dealer - $67.75 per coil

i also grabbed some copper Denso plugs while I was in there.

Truck has 132k on what I believe the were the original NGK coils.

Quick start, smooth idle and definitely more power when accelerating. No complaints here.

 

Both brands are equally good quality. Toyota uses both brands of ignition parts but I see more DENSO tags on oem parts than NGK. I have been servicing and repairing my entire families vehicles for 50 years. I have used off-brand coils, usually $70 for 6, in some cars and got nearly 100k trouble free miles out of them. I had 1 of those cheapo coils fail after 5 years of use. I may possibly risk those again when the time comes to replace mine. I am one that prefers to use Toyota parts for most mechanical items. I have always had good luck with off brand window motors, ignition coils, wheel speed sensors, and other motors and switches. I am not recommended these just stating how my experiences have been.

I found the "singles" on Amazon for 41.18, which may or may not be what you ordered because I can't find the seller's name or "denso online store" anywhere. But I'm not very amazon savvy, or tech savvy at all, so that could be my problem lol.

If they were all NGK, then they've been changed previously. Factory comes with 3 Denso, 3 NGK

 

Rear brake job today. New drums, shoes, and hardware along with alignment

 

Used Softopper. Came with the boot and the tent. May try camping out of it with the pup next week

 

Had my flip keys cut and programmed. I like it way better having it in one piece instead of a separate key and fob

I've been meaning yo do this for awhile. I'll get around to it sooner or later.

 

Soooooo day 5 of having my wife's 3rd Gen and it's down due to possible AC clutch going bad maybe I should keep my 2nd Gen lol. Have had zero problems with my baby. Hers has left her stranded twice already this would have been the 3rd time if she didn't have her new Mazda.

 

I have had one 3rd gen and three 2nd gens for good reasons. That 2nd gen is a better, simpler, more reliable truck. I loved my 3rd gen but the build quality and additional electronics are not going to provide 300k+ trouble free miles like a 2nd gen. My 3rd gen was a real 1st year new gen stinker so that was an odd poor build. Even after all the recalls and repairs I just never had a warm and fuzzy about it. You know that you can add every creature comfort, and high tech feature, of the 3rd gen into your 2nd gen. I was serious when I told you that you would miss the 2nd gen. The only benefit, beyond looks, is the better mpg on the 3rd gen. There is no shame in sticking with 2nd gens. Had one when I bought the new 3rd gen and 6 months later realized I should have kept my 2nd gen. Took me 5 years to decide to go back to a 2nd gen and it was the best decision I made. Sell the 3rd gen and bank the money so that one day, maybe, sometime in the next year or 2, you might need to buy an alternator or something for the old reliable 2nd gen.

 

I'd keep the 2nd gen. More reliable and better looking truck overall.

The only other real viable marital bliss solution, that would please her and give you the feel of something "new", would be sell both trucks and buy a newer 4runner that has the same powertrain as the 2nd gen. If you could live without a bed then this is something worth considering. Have had similar thoughts but I still need a truck for truck things.
