TFL just broke their new Tacoma

Wonder if the drive shaft to the front diff still turns when the transmission is only in 2wd like some trucks. They didn’t check the shaft after the 4wd failure. Knowing that could help diagnose the issue. My guess is the locking mechanism for the 4wd failed. Guess that is obvious but I don’t think it was the transmission. More likely the locking pin and or the actuator. There were not any grinding sounds or apparent loose internal noises. I think it is an easy fix but embarrassing for Toyota. Could have been operator error contributed as it seems driver failed to follow instructions on proper engagement going from 4wd high to low and when engaging mts/crawl

 

My evaluation: the front differential broke. Nothing was visibly broken under the truck, that rules out front driveshaft and both CVs. The sensor light for 4x4 / low still works, which means the transfer case and the magnetic hubs work. The truck drives in RWD without sounding like a bucket of rocks, which (to me) points to a shaft break right where the driveshaft goes into the front diff.

Safe bet that we see the video of them with the truck on rollers figuring out where the break is in less than a week. And if the front driveshaft is turning, it's the diff.

Toyota helped them get this truck. They also went through 3 Defenders by Land Rover when the first one broke and the second one was screwed up by the dealer while installing a winch bumper. You underestimate the value that having a big audience gets you. Any of the rest of us and this truck sits at the dealer for 3 months while waiting for parts.

I offroad a 2018 4Runner extensively here in Colorado, and am on the list for an Xtracab 4th gen Tacoma. I've been concerned / critical of the push to small displacement / hybrid drivetrains in a number of places. If this leads Toyota to do a redesign to improve reliability, then we all benefit.

 

Everyone is freaking out with this All it means is something failed . It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a design floor or engineering floor . Could it be yes , but it’s a machine ,and machines fail sometimes.I’m sure Toyota will be all over this.

We will see. But keep in mind , it could have happened from something as little as a bolt that failed ., which caused something to disconnect . Everyone goes to the dark side right away . Let’s see what happened first .lol

I, along with many of you, are anxious to see what failed. Toyota Fanboy Life has a big audience and will get the Royal treatment from Toyota. They’ll go above and beyond what any of us could ever hope for in terms of service.
Meanwhile, the replies from the Toyota apologists are entertaining to read whilst having my morning coffee.

 

What struck me is how foolish the TFL staff looked. They were ill equipped, ill prepared, and looked like a bunch of middle aged dopes. They want clicks so badly that they're willing to show the world how not to off road in the winter even at their own expense.

I'm sure that Toyota would have liked to speak with them before the video was posted, and I have to wonder if it will affect their relationship and future invitations to press-events.

 

What basis do you have for saying this about the Trail Terrains? Just this one video, where several other variables are different?

They are one of the best snow performing ATs in testing. I have them on my CX-30 and they perform well so far.

 

I don't think so. There was a very limited cracked engine block recall for a few Chevrolets (I think both mid sized and full sized).

If they are anything like the Rugged Trails that came on my truck (they look pretty similar) then they absolutely suck in the snow. They had terrible lateral grip. Just a heavy crown in the road would be too much for them let alone cornering.

Could it be something dumb like snow jammed around a sensor and broke it?

Should have tried a different shop? You would think the authorized Jeep dealer would know what they are doing, but these days can’t take that for granted

 

Had to be a horrible feeling to hear that pop and lose front wheel drive.
Don’t rule out side fumbling of the lunar wainshaft as the cause. It’s the only thing that hasn’t been postulated yet.

My favorite cause in the thread so far- “they wuz spinning the tires too hard!”

 

Like all on here I’m very interested to learn what the failure was….

With that said, regardless of what the failure was, I’m just not a big fan of buying the first year model after an overhaul. There’s just too much supporting evidence out there that shows manufacturers (even Toyota) have to work through some bugs. Not on my watch, and not at these prices….

Smart money just waits until the 3rd year.
