Wait till the price of gas is $10 per gallon.

 

Along with the commensurate increase in electricity costs - the difference won’t be that dramatic. With PG&E in California it’s cheaper to drive a Tacoma at 20mpg than a Rivian at 2mi/kwh right now based on their average cost per kWh delivered.

Assuming gas prices hit $10/gal and electricity hits $1/kwh (both double current CA rates) a Tesla 3 (4.5mi/kwh) costs 22¢/mi and a Camry (39mpg) costs 26¢/mi. Not much difference between the two comparable vehicles.

 

The difference is you can buy solar panels (with huge tax incentives from gov) and generate your own electricity to fuel your EV. Can’t really drill for oil in your suburban neighborhood.

 

That’s true, but also an expensive upfront cost regardless of government handouts.

 

Batteries are the expensive part and not worth it IMO if you are somewhere that the power is on 99% of the time. If you truly can’t go without electricity I think a small generator to run the essentials is the way to go.

 

In NJ it's different. The $35 to fill up my Honda to go the same miles in an EV is about $15

 

The USA will invade another country before they'd let gas prices get that high.

I pay 11 cents/kWh which equals 3 cents/mile to drive my Tesla Model Y. Local gas prices are $2.75/gallon and my Tacoma gets 19mpg, so that is 15 cents/mile. A Toyota Highlander (compatible to a Model Y) gets 26 mpg or 10 cents/mile.

With today's prices 100 miles cost:
Tesla = $3
Highlander = $10
Tacoma = $15

With gas at 10/gallon and electricity at $1/kwh
The cost for 100 miles change to:
Tesla = $27
Highlander $38
Tacoma = $52

crazy's gas and electricity numbers don't match up to what I've googled, but they're more pessimistic so I went with them. And, I have no idea where 4.5 miles/Kwh comes from. My actual consumption over 43K miles is much more at 3.7 mi/Kwh. Nonetheless even with all the numbers skewed against the EV it still wins the cost/mile competition.

Ya'll can hate EV's all you want, but at least hate them for the right reasons. The charging infrastructure is lacking, fast charging takes 20 minutes, the range can be limiting, umm I'm sure there's more.

 

California electric prices from PG&E along with CA gas prices. Figured if we’re talking about $10 gallon gas it would likely happen somewhere that prices are already pretty obscene at. The 4.5mi/kwh for a Tesla 3 was from Google search results. Some results were higher, some lower but that’s the one I went with. The math is correct for the efficiency I used and is worse if the EV is less efficient.

I have nothing against EVs and owned one until it was no longer workable with my lifestyle. I’d buy one again without a problem if it fits my needs.
