What I noted was a driver who was VERY IMPATIENT. In his driving and most particularly where he was pulling down the Chevy as he was backing down (he was in the clear by then) and didn’t give a shit about the Chevy possibly losing the little traction it had in such a bad place.

Expect this kind of failure when you have to throttle out with no patience. I’m also blaming Toyota USA for being fucking greedy. They have enough money from us to start their own manufacturing plant. All in house.

On a side note…TOYOTA USA…STOP USING PLASTIC PARTS IN ICE’s :smack:

The guy in the video seems to be absolutely clueless about manufacturing processes and quality check points. Its WAY more complicated then Toyota just calling a driveline vendor ( Aisin?) an saying : "ship us 10,000 of your cheapest front diffs so we can build some Tacomas". Toyota designs the components then puts the design out for bids from manufacturers, as does every other manufacturer on the face of the planet. Some of the largest manufacturers have subsidiaries that will build components for their brand of vehicles. During the development stages, QA testing takes place. From the first prototype design to the first article components, things are tested. Then they get the green light to start cranking them up and delivering them. Periodic compliance testing happens during the production phases. There were plenty of "spy" photos of Toyota taking the trucks out into the real world for driving tests and off road functionality.

I'm as curious to see what broke as the next guy. I'm thinking that it wasn't the diff itself as you would have heard sporadic engagement of whatever teeth were left on the R&P. Are these trucks still using the ADD type of axle shaft engagement? I found it curious that TFL didn't check to see if the driveshaft was still turning.

Apparently that's what happened according to most on here.

Why would it not be Toyota’s fault? They are the ones that designed, sourced the parts and assembled the vehicle.

    Yeah.
Those guys either don't know much about how these trucks work or are just not letting on that they do.

Anyway, he spun through the ice and hit some grip on that rock. He wasn't spinning in deep snow or on thick ice with no chance of finding grip, the grip was right there under a very thin layer of ice and he found it suddenly when he burned through the ice. It's right there in the video. Virtually every broken CV axle video you find has someone spinning, then suddenly getting grip, and a pop. Should it have happened? Nah, but they seem to beat on that thing.

As far as the supply chain video guy, he's got some decent points, but none of these auto makers are purposely trying to sell you crap -- that's just not good for business. Well, maybe some do. Engineers make the specs and they get someone to make something to that spec for the best price. Some QC happens, but not every part is inspected in detail. More failures = more inspections, fewer failures = fewer inspections (probably why the recent axle issue made it through). Every worker along the supply chain is demanding more money and benefits (for good reason, as things are more expensive these days), and a bunch of people just don't want to work anymore. Corners will be cut. And if that guy's job is making YouTube videos, he sucks at his job, too.

I hate buying anything expensive these days.

After all things considered, I’m blaming TFL for all this. Not because I think they abused the truck, I didn’t see any signs of abuse.

It’s much deeper than that. It’s them posting these videos up. Leaving everyone to speculate what may or may not of happened, who’s to blame…etc. now we have the entire site in a battle about who’s damn fault it is and everyone spewing out their every thought on what may of happened, and who’s fault it is.

    Thanks TFL :brianr::luvya:

Hopefully they can get another video out soon where we can see exactly what failed, and why. Not only are we curious, I’m sure Toyota will be too

Toyota did lower their standards on Vendor parts, I guess this may or may not be a consequence depending on what part is discovered to have failed.

    lol!

One vehicle breaking one time (even if it’s on a YouTube video) means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things.

My old boss had to “lemon law” his Camry, which is statistically one of the most reliable vehicles around.

I really love my ‘23, but I plan to replace it with another Toyota in a few years. Once I see what the verdict is on the next generation 4-Runner and Land Cruiser, I’ll decide between the three, even if one broke on TFL Trucks.

    I took away two things.

1, the motors in both trucks really had to wind up to get those wheels to start moving. I'm guessing the hill is steeper than it looks, or the tiny turbos just need to spool to get any kind of torque.

2, those tires looked well inflated for a snow over ice terrain.

But you know, we all have our techniques. I'm agreeing with the above that it was probably the front diff that went. And it was probably a factory defect, not a design flaw. As much as I want to jump in on the forthie hate, I can't blame it on anything but assembly error until the autopsy proves otherwise. It happens, especially on an early production model.

That may be what happened, but if so that doesn't bode well for this 4th generation of Tacomas. Because it wasn't like the guy was smoking those tires. I understand that CV axles aren't as durable as solid axle but there is no way it should have failed under those conditions. Beyond that nothing in that front end should have failed under those conditions. If this video is indicative of these trucks this is going to be one c********** of a rollout.

I'd bet broken CV, splined section diff side. That'll happen when a spinning front tire finds traction under load. Forward momentum is your friend!

Impatient techniques either don’t do a good job, or fuck things up sooner.

That I’m not sure of, but an excellent question.

I thought rule number one is deflating some air for best traction. And to even attempt crawl control in that situation was lame.
