Pretty sure I’ve seen them testing other vehicles the same way and they were in 4HI.

4HI and full beans in that situation, slippage or not, sounds like a recipe for disaster.

EDIT: It sounds like the tires are biting some.

If you watch the video and think really hard about how the Tacoma 4wd /MTS/Crawl/Locker system works you will have your answer as to what drive selector the transfer case was in.

He was in crawl control right before it happened, which required 4lo.

He disabled crawl control. I seriously doubt he then went to neutral and into 4hi. That would have been really obvious.

Nah. I heard that one of the TFL guys rewired the truck so that he could use the locker and crawl control in 4Hi. It’s definitely their fault. :D

Those Rugged Fails were the absolute worst tires l ever had on a truck, in fact when l got my 2015 Tacoma l had them put other tires on before delivery.

I like how he says the tires have been great except for the one time they almost killed me. No thanks. I don’t want any tire with a nearly solid side lug like they have. There are so many better tires on the market.

I hated them. They even sucked just in the rain. I still have them in my shed with about half the tread left just collecting dust.

Their tires could have been overinflated...happened to TRD JON. I believe his were at like 50 psi all around.

You're absolutely right. I don't trust any of them. I could fill pages with stories of these so called professionals and the rank amateur things they've done to my cars over the decades. I worked at a large dealership as a supervisor for five years before escaping. Competence is hard to find anywhere. I do all that I can myself and go to a dealer only for warranty and what I can't handle myself. Then interrogate them on everything.

It all boils down to this.
TFL took every truck they tested for years on that same trail without a breakage.
They just ran a Colorado in front of the Tacoma no problem.
Every product is supposed to be manufactured to perform the tasks they are intended for. It's an OFF ROAD TRD. Key words, OFF ROAD. Was it intended to go down that trail as it was driven? If you say yes then there's only three possible reasons for the breakage.
    1. One individual substandard part.
    2. All of that part made are substandard.
    3. Poorly engineered part.
I've been researching all the trucks available before I decide. Toyota came out the winner but only because it had fewer things I didn't like then the rest of them not because it looked like a great truck. One thing I noticed through all my comparisons is that it seems suddenly every company is having tons of problems with new vehicle defects. Electrical, mechanical, cheap parts, everything seems substandard these days. It's very frustrating trying to have confidence in a purchase anymore.
