KO2's for 3rd fen Tacoma is ot worth it?

That’s a good deal. You should be able to find a shop to mount and balance for $20 to $25 per tire, maybe less. It’s worth it to get the best balance process you can afford. Have fun.

I am on my second set on my 2016 Taco TRD OR. Used mostly for off roading on bad trails where blowouts and sidewall tears are an everyday risk.

They have never failed me. About 30,000 KM of off road trips the past 5 years and they are holding up well. Me retired, me like driving in the bush…

If used offroad a lot, they can get noisy after 40K miles. My first set did, but did not stop me from getting a second set. However, I never have less than 500 pounds in the bed on every off road trip, and usually a lot more. Also wretched hard washboard rocky roads so the noise with higher mileage did not surprise me.

They seem to be working well for Andy and Dawn on their Tacoma Around the World travels.

Other pic shows the typical trails I am on from Spring to Fall. In the past 5 years I have hundreds of trips on these kinds of trails, so I have good confidence in their durability.

There are lots of other good tires out there as well. Pick one that suits your driving needs. I picked an E load tire that suited my terrain.

 

Great on rocks, not so good on snow. But it doesn’t snow here and we off-road a lot on rugged mine roads and also pull a trailer. I’ve always used them on all of my Toyotas and never had a blowout. I am sure you’ll like them- good find!

 

I tried two sets of duratrac on the FJ
This POS tires would go out of balance in like 5-7k miles.

 

Are they used? Look at the born date on the sidewall. Chances are they may be blems , may have been rejects or returned because they are out of round. I ran them for 30 years and the quality sure went down, I then switched to Toyo AT2s and now on AT3s. IMO the BFGs are not as good as the AT3. I just put another set of 265/70/17s on my Son's Tacoma for $800 at DT.

 

I’m curious, what size and load Toyos did you out 70K on? Hope the KO2s work out as well, they aren’t bad tires, they just aren’t the best road friendly version of an AT. They are more offroad oriented and work well at that aspect. Super tough.

 

Been through 4 sets never had a single complaint only got one flat caused by a bolt I picked up somewhere. No balancing issues none of the sidewall blow outs people seem to have and my 285's saw alot of rock

 

something to keep in mind is that every tire shop out there will carry KO2's, in the event you pop a flat in some podunk town....the same can't be said for some other wheels out there.

 

Duratracs suck, weak sidewalls and I did have balancing issues but I think that was the fault of discount tire. Terrible rain traction and bad tread life in general.

As for the balancing, I bought mine for my Jeep at Kansasland tire where I bought the Jeep. Beautiful balancing, super smooth using only clip on weights in the back and stick ons inside. I live in TX and this was 12 years ago so I knew nothing. Back home, it was time to rotate and so I took them to Discount locally and paid for a R+B, because I thought they needed to be rebalanced during a rotation. Had I known better I would have just rotated them in the driveway which is what I should have done. The teenagers there ripped off all the weights and rebalanced them using clip ons on the outside only and they completely screwed up the perfect ride I had. I never got it back to correct, went back like 3 times until I gave up. I was too young to push them to make it right. Probably having non hub centric aftermarket steel wheels didn’t help, DT isn’t equipped to balance those very well with the cone balancer though I didn’t know that at the time. Live and learn.

 

This description, sans the winter performance sounds like my experience with Duratracs lol.
