I'm looking to replace the shocks on my 2000 base model. I know that these trucks (especially a light weight base model) don't ride very well on rough roads, but I'm looking for what you guys would recommend for shocks to improve the ride a bit. Not looking for anything crazy, I don't tow with this truck and I don't go off road with it beyond just gravel/forest roads.

Right now, I'm looking at KYB Excel-Gs or Gas-A-Justs. Are either of these good? I also noticed that these don't come with the spring on the front shock. Would this be something that I would have to put on, or would these just be run without a front spring (I know some American trucks of the same era or older didn't run front springs)?

    Thanks in advance!

I see you have a 5 lug. Maybe check in there. They would have first hand knowledge for sure
    Good luck

KYB Gas-A-Justs are decent shocks (and cheap) for a 5 lug Tacoma, forget the Excel-Gs. On a 5 lug you don't need to change front springs as they are seperate
from the shocks. So, changing shocks is nearly as easy in front as in the rear. I've been running the Gas-A-Justs in my 5 lug utility/commuter Tacomas for 20+ years, they last a good 60-80K miles depending on how/where you drive. Slightly more firm ride/handling, but not too stiff/rough.

Awesome, thank you! I'd imagine that anything will ride better than the blown shocks on it now. For the price and with my experience of KYBs on my old Subies, they seem like the best route to go.

If you don't mind me asking, what's wrong with the Excels?

Nothing really wrong with them, if you are looking for a stock/OE replacement shock they are fine.
In my opinion the Gas-A-Justs perform much better, (and probably last longer) for the slightly higher cost.

Ordered the Gas-a-Justs, we'll see how they do.
