Drove my 2006 (with less than 115k miles on it) Friday & it drove fine. 6 hours later I get in and smell a faint odor of gasoline. By the time I got it one block the smell was overpowering. Took it back home, parked it for 2 days for it to air out. Started it up with the hood up and there is a fountain of gas spewing from the top/rear area of the engine and bathing the engine in gas. Will have to get it towed someplace to fix. Anyone else ever have this problem? Fuel pump maybe? Sure don't was this cherry of a truck to burn up on me! In the picture it's coming from right in the center in the area of the yellow device.Taco Gas Leak.jpg

Fuel pump is in the tank. It’s a hose, line, or connection. My guess is an easy fix.

Are you sure that's fuel? Looks like coolant to me.

That's coolant, not fuel. Although that "yellow device" is a fuel pressure regulator.

Grab a small piece of paper towel and wipe up some of the mess until your piece of towel is soaked, then set it down on the driveway and try to light it on fire...that'll be your answer.

I once had a few injectors start leaking gas out of the top on a 1989 3.0 V6 Tacoma , I had to buy new injectors

OK guys. I went to my local retired, but still very knowledgeable mechanic. He looked at the picture and spotted where squirrels have chewed away part of the connector on the left line of the two with orange fittings. The left one has been chewed between the orange fitting and the metal clamp on the line. It's fuel. That's why the smell of gas was overpowering. I went to South Atlanta Toyota and they had to special order the hose and fitting. It will take at least 5 days. That's the only bad part of owning a cherry like this '06, low mileage Taco. Getting harder to get some parts. I got two of the orange fittings and two hoses. $95 total. Now I have to deal with these bastard squirrels. I even had two bags of mothballs in the engine compartment. I'll try peppermint spray next but beginning work on closing in the carport with snake fence. Will have to put something electric across the 17ft. drive in opening. I'm considering this across the opening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyCp2Rj57GI It's called Grid Guard.

I bypassed the fitting for now and just stuck the hose onto the tubing at both ends. They are different diameter so that must be the only reason for the orange fittings even being there. I secured it with a zip tie pulled real tight. Started it and moved it back under the carport. No gas smell and no apparent leaking in the engine for now.

I don’t think anyone can mistake the smell of coolant for fuel.

Glad you go under the car port. Good luck with the squirrels.

Just a recommendation, but while you wait for the permanent fix parts to arrive I would recommend going under the hood and what not with a flash light and proverbial fine tooth comb. Look for any other damage those suckers could have caused and fix it while you are in there....that way you only have to deal with your truck being down once.

I once had a similar issue where one chewed through the airbag sensor wire on the front driver side. Fortunately it was a simple 20 minute or so repair, but a pain none the less.

Well...based on some of the posts here...people are capable of things I could never imagine would confuse my dog....so I try to offer up a pathway to solid diagnosis of what's going on.

If you can get away with it, I would use a pellet gun on those squirrels.

I still can't get past the fuel pump in the engine bay.

I'd start clearing house with a pellet gun and make some stew with the evidence.

What exactly do you mean by this statement?

I remember when all fuel pumps were in the engine bay. You could replace it in about 30 minutes, two mounting bolts and two piping connections.

    Cam driven Diaphragm Pump.
