well if the spline on the stub of the cv broke clean inside then theyll have to figure out how to get it out lol. backyard mechanics would try to tack weld and try to pull the stub out. toyota is just going to replace the whole diff.

    Yeah.
I think it is typical of auto makers to do a post-mortem analysis -- on new models/products, or when they start seeing a large number of similar failures, or when there is a failure that points to a potential big safety issue. They need to determine whether it was a bad part design, bad part manufacturing, or an assembly/process error before the problem potentially grows.

Like another poster pointed out, though -- we may never know what failed or why. If they do share it with TFL, they know it will be shared with the community. So, they will either not share it at all (safest route, but may make them look bad), or be very careful what they do share (this is my bet).

I'm not a fan of TFL... especially Roman and his kid. I'm sure they are lovely people. I just don't enjoy watching them.

We live out on an FS (Skutumpah) road on the northwest sector of the staircase, and I see a lot of broken 4x4s out here - side by sides, Toyotas, fords, jeeps, etc...especially off of some of the trails that hit the south side of Bryce or down in some of the side canyons. Most of the time, the issues are driver error. I've seen very few honest mechanical breakdowns.

I was very much getting ready to put in a dealer order for a manual OR or Sport against my better judgement of going for a 1st model year truck but after this... yeah I think I will wait a year or two to see how things shake out. I am not in a rush, I love my 2022 ORP 4Runner, I just wanted the stick shift but not enough to give myself a migraine.

It boils down to this; people like these trucks because they are overbuilt or at least the perception that they are more overbuilt than the competition. This is factored into the MSRP Toyota puts on these trucks, the dealer markups, the demand, etc. Everybody knows why people love these trucks and it sure as heck isn't because of the price point.

So if that is all going away now then what is left? Toyota truck buyers are more discerning than the average Corolla or Camry or Rav4 buyers who may not care that their vehicle is assembled in Mexico with cheaper "more efficient" parts than the last generation. Tacoma buyers care, and not just the enthusiasts who sign up for the forums, the vast majority of Tacoma owners are buying into the reputation of the truck and the rely on the same when it comes to selling or trading their truck. This is not a customer base you want to screw around with and it seems like they went ahead and did exactly that to improve the costs line of their P&L.

The chances of this being a total fluke are low. It doesn't matter how bad or good these TFL guys are at driving or wheeling, they are a constant variable in their testing and they handle a lot of press vehicles and old junkers and from my understanding this is an unprecedented outcome for such a new vehicle in their capable or incapable hands.

Just because the "driveline" was sent to Toyota doesn't mean the dealer mechs couldn't identify what failed and told the owner (TFL). Why the parts failed is another story.

Same here of about almost 30 years of wheeling it is mostly driver error when breakages occur. This could be a mechanical issue for sure but to blame Toyota with no evidence is pure speculation.

    Yeah.
Shit happens. More and more shit happening is being caught on camera. It doesn't mean there's more shit, just more YouTube evidence of said shit.

One of the reasons Toyotas are reliable is that they find something that works and stick with it. For years. Much of my '77 Celica is the same as what was on my '92 pickup. Which is also why they are chided for being behind on the tech curve.

I still don't know enough about all the driveline changes for the new one. Not much changed between 2nd and 3rd, but I think this gen is a much bigger change. I'd still never buy the first year of a model redesign, but I appreciate those that do.

We don't have snow right now, and I haven't done any rocky hill climbs, but I've given my truck some chances to break if it wanted to be a pansy. There is a passenger side exposed tree root on a muddy hill that's literally right by my house that loves giving people grief, and it takes speed in 4-high to get up it, with the root breaking your momentum. I've mashed into it enough times to probably need a front end alignment. We also have a woop that will get your front wheels off the ground, but not the rear.

You know I was surprised to see how completely covered the sides of my truck get in the mud. I have zero tire poke but there's about 2" of area that my little mudflaps don't cover. My truck ends up looking just as bad as my K5 Blazer did with 36's. Also, compared to my previous Tacoma, this one feels noticeably lighter when off roading. Driving it on-road does not give you that impression.

What year? I had a '79 and that thing was a tank. Slow and inefficient, but a tank lol.

I’ve been following the Tundra forum on this too and it doesn’t seem like they’ll ever tell us. What the data from that forum suggests is that anything made after March 2023 should be good. There haven’t been any failures reported to the forum for trucks after that build date. Now I guess the 2024s are losing transmissions, but haven’t seen any posts on the forum about it. Must be coming from Facebook.

    TLDR:

Any news as to what happened?
    Manufacturing defect
    Or real issue in design...

I keep hearing something about the turbo causing massive torque and then causing severe stress on tribe train parts...

Mine was an '88 and I really loved that thing. My header was too close to the starter though and it would frequently not start, even after building a little shield for it. I put all the cool Edelbrock parts on it, man I miss that thing.

More useless glamis stories. Got it. Still stuck on recreating the video and not adding value or explanation yourself . Got it. Still Ignoring how basic suspension design could lead to it rising. Got it.

I thought maybe an ape like you could learn if I posted a video

I don’t wheel my Tacoma. I have a fleet of landcruisers that all do a better job.
