I make it a point to never blow my nose into a new oil filter.

I swapped mine out literally yesterday.

As far as I could tell, all the internal parts (spring, cap, and tube) were identical. Only the housing was different.

Even the drain plug was identical.

You can see in this photo the metal tube is slightly taller...but it does not extend past the paper filter top end.

Does that mean the taller metal canister has less ground clearance?

Not sure what clearance (if any) that it affects.

It gives the paper filter more support if anything.

EDIT: It's spring loaded in there so you can swap it out if it matters.

Here's the first time I was going to swap it out but bought the wrong paper filters.

Here's a photo showing the wrong filters I bought...on the left.

I'll compare them with a dial caliper when mine comes in. I'm due for my yearly oil change here soon anyway.

I've had the metal one on the shelf with my automotive stuff since I prepped for my first oil change. Have not yet put it on. I think I got suckered in to buying when I was a newbie taco owner by threads like this.
The plastic is very strong. Use the MotivX newer style cap wrench and don't over tighten it and you should be OK.
I don't plan to use my aluminum one until something happens to the plastic one.

The aluminum one threads on and off much easier than the polymer one.

The polymer cap comes off rather easily when cold, but when warm/hot it is a bit stiff.

I had a little battle w/the plastic one prior to the swap out...and I was the last one to tighten it...the engine was hot since I drove to DAFB Auto Hobby Shop.

Of course, I didn't gorilla tighten it...but it was still clingy and took some elbow grease to remove.

This next oil change will be the first time I remove the aluminum housing.

Do you guys know if the aluminum housing has the same bypass pressure or are you just guessing?

It’s the same, the alloy housing is used on other applications with the 3.5L

Standard on many Toyota and Lexus with 3.5L

You talking about the filter bypass? That's an internal mechanism on these.

yes, that is what I meant- if the filter bypass pressure on the plastic and metal caps are the same.
